Newb question about 9mm load data

I am at some point going to start reloading. I've been studying the Lymans Reloading Handbook 49th Edition. Cptr 11 intro to data a little vague concerning bullets.

I go to data on 9mm Luger, my interest in reloading a target/practice load, 115 grn FMJ/plated RN. The only data concerning a 115 grn projectile list a 115 grn JHP. For example, using Unique powder, sug starting grn 4.4 @ 996 fps, max grn 5.8 @ 1233 fps for 115 grn JHP. No data for 115 FMJ.

My plan would be to use berry's preffered plated RN 115 grn/Unique powder/cci 500 primers, starting out at starting grn weight for a target load.

Is the data same for 115 grn JHP and 115 grn FMJ/plated RN bullet?

JHP and FMJ could be the same, but definitely not the same for plated bullets or lead bullets. The Aliant web site only shows one recipe for Uniique using 115 Speed Gold Dots at 6.3 grains and 1.125" OAL going 1,244 fps. Plated bullets can achieve the same velocity with less charge weight, and lead bullets with even less powder. Berry's website does not show load data. However I would start at maximum OAL, 1.170" and 25% less maximum weight at 4.7 grains.

For handgun data jhp and fmj data should be the same. The only thing to be aware of is OAL. Jhp will be a touch shorter than an fmj. Plated bullets use lead data. You usually can't ramp up plated to jacketed velocities.

When you get a start load and max load start at bottom and work up. For targets loads find a happy medium and find a load that shoots accurately and cycles. If you get only a single data load drop down 10-20% to start. Alliant only gives one load. Accurate gives start and max. Other load manuals will vary. Always proceed with caution.

For 9, I love AA#5. Just starting using power pistol and like it alot too. Bullseye is my 45 powder but works well in 9. Unique is a good all around powder too.

They're not liberals, they're leftists. Please don't use the former for the latter. Liberals are Locke, Jefferson, Burke, Hayek. Leftists are progressives, Prussian state-socialists, fascists. Liberals stand against the state and unequivocally support liberty. Leftists support state tyranny.

I've loaded Xtreme 115gr plated RN over 5.0 and 5.2 grains of Unique. Both were loads I worked up to and fired fine The 5.2 felt snappier but it was very accurate. These were fired out of a Glock 17

Hollow point and RN bullets aren't necessarily the same dimensions and will need to be worked up individually. Try using the online resources from either the bullet manufacturer or the powder company you are looking to use.

Have you ever tried loading a plated 115 FMJ to 1.170"???

Cuz the bullet is too short to stay in the case at that OAL.

              OP:

Go ahead and use the JHP data. Try 1.125" OAL with about 5grs to start.

4.9gr at 1.127" gave me nearly same hole consistency at 7 yards out of my XD9

Thanks for the response. I have been looking at Alliant and Hodgdon websites for data pryor to getting the Lymans Reloading Handbook. Looks like using data for leaded RN in 115 grn will work for plated RN in 115 grn.

There is some abreviations in data section I dont understand. For example for 115 grn JHP 1.090 OAL, I get that, but then there is a BC:.129 SD:.130 and I cant find any explanation for what these abreviations mean. Also There is a drawing of what is a 9mm round with every dimension, calling out a OAL of 1.169. but I dont see a min/max. After reading through this book I have more questions than anwsers.

I got a friend who wants to split cost, but He knows less then I do. We want to start out with a Lee Challenger Single Stage Press, and related tooling...But I cant find any pistol powder anywhere.I'm on a waiting list to get the Unique. I know this isnt total rocket science, just having to do research on this data seems a little overwhelming... I'll figure this out.

I load Montana Gold 115 JHP to 1.165"-1.172" on 4.3 grains of TiteGroup for my G17L. They go about 1,280 fps now, and I am going to push them to over 1,440 fps to make major 9mm Open for USPSA.

I have been working up loads with 115gr Berrys Plated Hollow Base Bullets using Hodgdon Longshot Powder. Started at the min level with 5.0 grns then at 5.5 Grns. So far I Not found these loads very accurate at anything over 10yards thru my Sig P250. The good news is everything has gone bang and hit paper. Ive now loaded a batch at 5.8 grains.
To answer your question. For plated bullets use lead bullet data

I asked about 115 FMJ because it is too short to load to 1.170" OAL. JHP is longer. It has more bullet shank to work with.

All data I have ever seen shows COAL for 9mm is 1.169"
I am pretty sure most JHP bullets are shorter than FMJ/RN

4.2g Titegroup with Montana gold 115g FMJ here. Titegroup is an easy powder because min/max is such a small variation. Less testing more shooting.
