300 win mag reloading questions

im new to loading and wanted to make sure i wasnt gonna screw up. i have 7828 powder and wanted to load up some ammo that wont beat me up and also for hunting small deer in san diego. my book says min is 165gr bullets. maybe some1 can chime in and share some recipes? since powder is hard to get thats the only kind i could find. i have large rifle primers as well as large rifle magnum primers. i havnt purchased bullets yet because of my current dilemma

why not? if i can adjust the rounds and detune it a bit. was hoping 130gr bullet should do the trick as it puts it comparible to 30-06 or 308. its what i got and wanna use it.

300wm is nothing... pretty much a 7mm mag.

Just a tip for the noob... dont just trust anyones loads. Look up published data first, start from the bottom and work your loads up SLOWLY. not a round id want to over do.

Tried and true loads for one gun are not going to be tried and true for all guns.

You need to work up a load to your gun using the bullets and powder you want.

Ya why not? I love to use my 120gr TNT out of my 30-06 on poor ground squirrels. Boom! Fur,skin and eyeballs.

I would go the 150 grain route for small deer and coyotes, your going to have to do a ladder to see what your rifle likes best, be prepared to eat up a box of 50 bullets (maybe more) getting to a load you like. Then you have to load done more to see if it duplicates. BTW magnums eat up a pound of powder fairly quick.. If your serious about reloading your 300 winmag you should buy in twos. Powder varies from lot to lot, some vary at different temp extremes. Try and do your testing on the hottest days, this way your perfect load will not have a chance of over pressure when you hunt on cooler days.
Since your new to reloading, I would hit up one if the reloading classes held here on the board, just to get a lot of valuable and pertinent information. Bad things can happen to the uninformed when reloading.

Kielbasavw gave you some really good advise. If you receive data from someone, it's ok to use that data as a guide, but always reference it to a reloading manual or the powder company website.

As for Hutch 7.62's comment, I'm so guilty that I'm almost embarrassed...i load the ultimate girly round, the 22 Hornet. But you can't take away my man card, since I also load full power 45-70 for a 457 Wild West Magnum

thanks for the info guys. i actually am planning on taking a class very soon. im just trying to gather as much info as i can. i did search and there really isnt much info on this round.

7828 is a great powder for 300WM. It works well with a 150 grainer and it will give you some velocity.....start low and work up. You will find a load that works for your rifle that way.

Use the minimum load from any reloading manual or manufacturer's website (Powder or bullet) and work up half a grain at a time until you find the combination that shoots accurately in your gun.

I've shot ground squirrels with 300 grain bullets out of my 375 H&H.

Isnt San Diego in the condor zone ????... If so youll have to use barnes,, hornady gmx or nosler e-tip copper bullets... Ck all of the factory sites for loads... I like the barnes 168gr ttsx in my 300 mag... Very accurate in my rifle..... Cheers...

Never got my .300 WM to shoot well with lighter bullets... 180g seems to be the sweet spot for me.
