Hey be easy. We've shot a few times together. I don't think you remember me however. Twice at Pendleton and once at Burbank. My first three matches actualky.

Saturday it wasn't 100 F in the shade and your barrel didn't have issues cooling off. It's when you have extreme weather cooking the loads in the box, and preventing a barrel from cooling, even a little bit, that you get into trouble...and running near the edge, but in a larger case the edge comes on pretty quickly.

What is your Varget load for your 77 and 80 grain noslers in 223.

I remember you perfectly. That first time we met at Pendleton was a hard day, I had floaters and super haze at 600, it was a good lesson in eating right and drinking right the day before and during a match. I do remember you shot a good 600 I think and we had a good time chatting about loads and such. Sorry I certainly didn't mean to be snarky in any way. I know a lot of folks are concerned about temperature with powders, Mike Miller who is a great shooter won't shoo 748 in matches anymore because of that.

Part of my lack of caring is that I run 8208 almost exclusively with .223 and I've never seen elevation problems that were not my fault. I will be starting to reload for .30-06 for midrange and longrange (hope to make it down to Pendleton for those) and I'll have to investigate powder and temperature problems. I'll be primarily using H4859, IMR/H 4350, RL17, 8208, and 760 in the big six.

I try to avoid Varget like the plague because it's too hard to find and too expensive when you do. Again, no offense meant, I'd count you as a friend.

Actually I'll likely be down for the Clinic on Saturday, can't make Sunday though. Looking forward to being back on base, it's been a while.

Yea, and that one 600 yard match your firing pin bit the dust...and I bought a spare after that but I can't find it!

I've stalled at sharpshooter so I'll be at school too!! I am not sure it will help but it beats cleaning up the garage

I had a rough time with reloader 17 on an extra hot day at 1000. As the day wore on things got worse. I also had some high shots at 600 with TAC with 223....as I waited out a reversal when I finally shot the scoring disc was on 5 and the marker was almost off the top - I started to wonder....when it happened again I knew there was an issue.

The F class guys are all adamant that you have to stay far away from double base powders, and after some blown primers, very tight bolts, and hi fliers I certainly believe them.

I'd love to stick with tac, but I also don't want any 5's in the heat.

I switched to H4831SC for my 1000 yard and Varget for 223. Everyone says use 24.5 for Varget, but in mag load length ammo, but that's kind of hot...maybe for 600 yard extended OAL its not too hot, but I had one blown primer with magazine length 80 grain noslers.

I did a chrony test with 24.3 Varget and 77 grain noslers, and it too can cook off, just not as much...but here is the string....on a hot day at burro and one minute in the chamber.

2754 - 2771 - 2782 - 2788 - 2796 - 2801 - 2804......Was it the powder or the barrel bore growing from heat expansion?????

I am not an expert on this stuff, but it sure looks like something was happening.

If you want updates on what Powder Valley gets in and you got Facebook, "like" them on FB. They usualy post there before they even update there web site. They posted in the AM on there small shipment of Varget today...

The 50fps spread is what I was expecting with a good temperature insensitive powder but that flier out the top is extraordinary. I'll be sure to keep an eye on it. Highpower790 was also warning me about it so you are in good company. Ill stop threadjacking now, sorry folks.

young grasshopper you have learned alot in a short time,but you must plan ahead to be able to use varget ...figure out what you use per year and plan 2yrs ahead and never use ball powder.

Can I use ball powder in practice ? I've got too much of it to just toss. My primary is 8208 and it's very temperature insensitive and typically easier to find than Varget. I'm stocked for two or three years of 8208.

Varget is a tough find. It doesnt last long, or you pay through the nose for it...

Its my unicorn.
