Getting a press.. How does this list look *Update*: Order placed!

I've been looking on dillonprecision.com recently to price out my press and accessories and I feel like I'm getting suckered into something.

I have a cart of stuff for $1805.19


Check this over and point out what's wrong.

If I don't get the two caliber conversion kits or additional feeder plates, that's about a $300 savings. which I can put towards a different press for rifles like a single stage?

I don't plan on loading a ton of .30-06, but I do plan to load a bunch of .223 and 5.56 on top of a bunch of 45 acp.

Perhaps I can use the 650 to trim/prep rifle cases as set up in AR15barrels thread and load them up on a turret press?

You should definitely buy carbide des for the pistol calibers. You can get Lee carbide sets for $30. No need to buy the Dillon dies unless you really want them.

That Dillon stuff sure is expensive! I'm sure it will be a great setup, but you should make sure it is what you really want before splashing out that kind of cash.

Your list looks good. Go with the dillon casefeeder. I use one toolhead on my 550 to size my rifle brass and then another to load it. It is much faster to load the rifle ammo on the dillon than to do it single stage, even if you don't use a lot of it. I modified my 550 to run rifle brass through the casefeeder. I sized a big coffee can full of brass in 30 minutes or so. I trim with a CTS trimmer on a homemade base, but I would love to have the dillon trimmer.

The 650 is a great choice, but I haven't used one. The additional position for an extra die is good on the 650 as well. I do ok with 4 positions on the 550, but running rifle brass by hand was not OK.

If you want a shock, just price a 1050 and a Mr. Bulletfeeder. That is what I use for 9mm. I haven't yet bought caliber conversions for it. An empty toolhead is $200 alone.

I just got my 550 back from being rebuilt by Dillon. It runs much better now. They make awesome machines. I still have my Hollywood 12 position deluxe turret press for single stage work. Now that I bought a 550 conversion kit for 30 carbine, I won't have anything to load on the single stage. I do it all on the dillon's if I can help it. I have 7 toolheads with powder throwers and maybe 8 more without. Some are just for my sizing die for rifle brass.

It seems expensive but when you get the press you won't regret it. It's a quality peice of equipment. If you want to save money you can try finding a new press for sale in the classifieds here or ebay, but most try to charge more than dillon. You can defnately save money by not using dillon dies. A good set of carbide dies go on ebay for $20-$30.

Your going to want more primer tubes by the way.

Single stage your 30-06. That will save a few bucks

Reading your post, I'm going to assume you are new to reloading. If so, a progressive press is big step. There is a lot going on all at once & can be a bit much. A single stage press is slower, but is easier to learn the different steps involved w/ reloading. Not to mention a lot cheaper. Having said that, Dillon is good equipment, just a bit pricey.

I did the cheap case feeder thing and got a few months out of it. Lots of tweaking and regrets. I have the dillon one now and get the difference.
I also delayed on the roller handle. Your list is good. Only add I'd make is spare parts kit and maybe strong mount.
The first cost does sting I bit but the beast is solid.

Or you could get one caliber.. and as you go along, pick up a caliber conversion down the road... I also dislike the aluminum roller handle opting to use the ball as it is.. a lot of people seem to like them but I can work with the ball handle just fine.. I don't see it as a "needed" item.

You are missing trim dies for your RT1200.. need one per caliber (50.95-58.95), and caliber conversions for each caliber (77.95).

Check out brian enos's dillon website. He has alot of FAQ's, package and information on his pages. Not to mention his forums... but lots of competitive shooter weighted information.

You are also not going to want to reload 30 06 on a progressive, it's a *****.
