Polymer Coated 7.62x39 Storage

Have you guys ever got rust on polymer coated ammo even after you store them in Ammo Cans? I've read that some people still get rust. I'm guessing they don't live in SoCal, but can't be too sure.

I getting my case tomorrow and planning to throw them into ammo cans.

This seems like the easy fix.

If you do not want to buy any I am sure you have several large bottle of headache pills leftover from hmmm, starting in Nov 2008, you should already have some of these little dessicant packs from the pill bottles. Use them too...

go to any department store like macys or jcpenny and take the silica packs out of the shoeboxes. you could easily get 100's for free. 100s is a wee bit overkill though

I also leave my stuff in the factory packaging if it's for long term storage. A can of loos ammo might look neat to some (not me) but ya never know. We've all seen the WTS "Loose in cans. I don't remember what it is." I won't touch that stuff with a barge pole.

I don't understand the impulse to take perfectly good, neatly boxed up ammo and dump it willy-nilly into dirty old ammo cans.

I don't even do that with my reloads...they each get their little place of honor in a plastic ammo box as they await sacrifice to the god of splat-on-steel.

Just keep your ammo in a cool dry place and it will be fine for decades, whether it is in an ammo can or not.

Far more space-effective to ditch the packaging. Besides, it seems to work ok for the military.

Ummm... small arms ammo comes in boxes inside the can.

Mine are mixed, half are loose in ammo cans and half are boxed in ammo cans. But I do label specifically each can outside and inside to take the guess work out of the equation. Each ammo can I purchase I clean the inside, gasket checked and lubricated with silicone, and silica gel thrown in for good measure. I've had 7.62x39 polymer coated ammo in one of my cans that are loose since the mid-90's and still looks fresh from the day I purchased them.
