So I'm looking at the magentospeed v1 and v2 on midway and like how they attach to the end of the barrel. But wouldn't that effect your groupings?

Yes. My Ohler 35P has tried to commit suicide due to it jumping in front of bullets coming out of a gun without a sighting system on it. So, don't be like me and think you can just point a gun close to the right place. Always make sure you're aiming it through the middle of the "diffuser triangles".NRA Certified Pistol, Rifle, Shotgun and Metallic Cartridge Reloading Instructor

I use this one http://www.midwayusa.com/product/331...chrony-printer and it works perfect. Picks up every shot I've sent through it even in the desert with no shade. Printer is awesome because it prints a 10 shot string velocities/high/low/average/SD. Make sure to follow the directions on w/e one you get; a lot of the issues people have with chronographs are user errors and not the fault of the system.Comment

Yes and no.
You do not need to, but the units have little "eyes" that are looking up to the sky, when a bullet flies over them they sense the dark spot from the light blocked by the bullet. This starts and ends their timer and then they know what fps to put up on the screen.
By NOT having the screens, the units are looking up into the open sky or ceiling and only seeing well, everything, a bird or plane overhead could cause an error, maybe the position of the sun or how bright it is can cause an error in reading, SO the best thing to do is to put those triangles up so that way the eyes ONLY see the white plastic and as a result they can better focus on what they need to do.
Also, having those diffusers gives you a proper place to aim your gun at, if you aim too high or too much to the right and get an error, then what good is that? Properly used chronographs will most likely always have diffusers on them.
As for the magnetospeed, they are working on a pistol version. As it is the magneto will work on revolvers and some pistols with rails I believe.Last edited by stilly; 11-07-2013, 1:23 PM.7 Billion people on the planet. They aint ALL gonna astronauts. Some will get hit by trains...

Unless you are resting the magnetospeed on the front bag(which you shouldnt be anyways) it does not effect your groupings. I still get good groupings the same as I would without it on. It also comes with a screen that sits right next to you. You can record in shot groups and store them to the SD card. I usually do 5 shot groups with each load. It tells you the standard deviation, FPS and everything about the group. A huge plus that you can see it right then and there after each shot.Comment

Yes and no. It does change your POI, with all my rifles it raises it by about an inch. With my .223 it definitely opens up the groups, with my .308 not at all. But now I essentially do load development, narrow it down to a couple of loads based on ocw results and accuracy. Then I chrono those loads to see of there are any massive ds or es numbers. If not I'll settle on the fastest load. So it does become a two outing process at minimumComment

This magnetospeed even works for FULL AUTO.
So all them SKS owners with the match mod
can still chrono...
Or those with burpers or what not...

What's the difference between the magnetospeed v1 and the v2? Is it worth the difference?Originally posted by starsnufferTaking legal advice from a gun store owner or employee is like taking dietary advice at the McDonald's drive through. Just don't.

Depends on the rifle. With a lightweight contour barrel it may change the group size or point of impact slightly as the barrel heats. With heavier contours, varmint and target contours, it doesn't make much, if any, difference. Here is what the setup looks like on the bench. No downrange screens, long cables or space wasting electronics. Forgive the crappy phone picture:

The Bayo sensor attaches to the barrel with a nylon strap. It works with muzzle brakes too.

Here is the rifle I used the MagnetoSpeed v1 to test LT-32 powder in a Ruger .204 Barrel.

Here are two groups. The fliers on the left are pure shooter error, getting familiar with a new trigger.

And here is a Excel page I made as a template to cut and paste the MagnetoSpeed's .csv data file from the Mini-SD Card into. The data page and targets are filed in binders for reference.

Point of impact does not change with these heavier contour barrels. What is convenient is that the MagnetoSpeed data is stored on a mini-SD Card and is uploaded to Excel. Even with my Oehler 33 or 35P chronographs I have to reenter the data from a handwritten log or from the printout tapes. Also the MagnetoSpeed measures true muzzle velocity. Best of all it can be setup or taken down during a firing period in less that two minutes. It never reacts to nearby muzzleblast or looses data as shadows overtake the sky screens. It is completely independent of light. The only change that may be needed with the V1 is to increase sensor sensitivity to detect small bullets when used on thicker barrels, as the sensor sits further below the bore. This takes a few seconds to adjust via the settings menu. With the V2 sensor height below the bore is mechanically adjustable allowing even greater flexibility.
The MagnetoSpeed is just so easy to use it has relegated my Oehler chronographs to a second class status. If I ever need to work loads for my hand cannons, the Oehler 35P will find a use again.Comment

Great post Wrangler John. Exactly what I was saying. It doesnt have any effect on my groups either, especially using a bean bag up front to rest the barrel on. I love mine, I just wish it worked on semi auto handguns. It would seem like(on the V2 at least) that they could just make a small plastic block that attached to where the adjustment blocks attach to, but that it would have groves that would slide on the rail mount of the handgun. Just like the Streamlight TLR and other accessories slide on.Last edited by armyguy209; 11-08-2013, 10:59 AM.Comment

Thanks for the kind words. This product is so good that once they catch up with demand and refining the initial product , I bet they will produce a model for handguns, and especially semi-autos. Your idea is very good, and somebody with a block of Delrin or structural nylon and a hobby mill could probably work up a prototype easily. There may be a way to adapt it for a Ransom type machine rest, or maybe MagnetoSpeed can come up with a similar contraption. I could probably build something for one of my old rifle rests, but don't have the need for it now. Certainly, this is the future of chronographs.Great post Wrangler John. Exactly what I was saying. Wow it just dawned on me. What if we got one of those thingies that attaches to the trigger guard and has a 5" rod or so that sticks out and you can attach the magneto onto that, then it would work with MOST pistols, rail or not as long as it could be adjusted or fitted to have that sensor close enough to the barrel.
Here is a good starting point I bet, PLUS, it lets you know where you are aiming.
HEH, looks like the only BARSKA piece of crap that I would consider buying if I did not want to pay $14 for the NC Star...
