I always inquire with the people I'm shooting with If I can collect their brass.
I've been lucky most of the time. Nothing like collecting a treasure of empty shell casings at the end of a day-

I use a red ink stamp pad and stamp the bottom of each so if someone says something I show them the bottom and I get no more lip.

I wouldn't go to a range where I could not pick up my own brass. For my AR I use one of these: http://www.midwayusa.com/product/942...-brass-catcher

The ones you strap onto the gun tend to cause jams.

If I see someone putting their brass in the bucket, I ask them if they keep their brass, if they say no, I tell them I will pick it up for them if I can have it. I tell them I will put it to good use.

If the guy next to me saves his brass, whatever lands near me I pick up and give to him. That usually leads to him doing the same for me.

At the range I go to it is open season on the brass buckets. If its in the bucket and I load it, it's mine, all mine, bright shiny brass, must have the precioussssss.

If it is a caliber I don't load and I notice someone on the range saving that caliber, I tell them about it. Professional courtesy among brass recyclers.

            wow, buckets...

I have my kid stand over about 45 degrees 15' out and play CATCH with the PTR-91. For every cartridge he catches he gets a quarter. BUT he has to hold them long enough to drop them in the box, if he burns his hands and drops it in the dirt then it is no good... Took him three times out before he started asking for gloves... I DO make sure that he has safety glasses on at all times though.

Stilly, I heard the PTR is really tough on brass. Are you able to reuse most of the brass fired fom it or do you have to sort through to find the reloadable ones? I've stayed away from them just because I have heard so many people complain about how the destroy the cases during ejection.

Mine seemed to be okay. I only shot 20 rounds through it but the ONLY thing it seemed to do was leave zebra stripes on the shells. Apparently it has a fluted chamber and thus allows gasses to blow grease and carbon down the sides of the shells. And yes it does. But it looks badass to shoot so I am happy so far. Maybe those other folks have their gas system turned up too high, maybe they need to back it off and bleed some more gas out and it will go easier on the shells. I had no issues with mine so far. I mean, I had a couple of misfires and some ftf sometimes, but I chalked that up to the ammo being old, then confiscated by the police, then locked up in evidence storage, then finally freed by me and then sat around for another 7 years then finally shot. It was brazillian surplus too... LC seemed to perform a tad better, but the gun likes to run wet I believe After I took it out the second time it performed much better, no misfires or anything, I was using the Blaster rounds- 150gr from Freedom Munitions.

I mark it pick it up and if a loose a few I couldn't care less.

I also ask people around me if they want their brass if it is an interesting caliber.
If you want change you have to put in your 2 cents, you can't just sit on the sidelines and whine.
