    Mini Kaboom?

Interested in forum opinions on what may have happened here.

Was out at Chabot Range today with my Bro-in-law and his Father.
His Dad was shooting my Beretta M9, when he tells me that he felt something hit him in the face, and that the guns locked up...
I had to pop the magazine, racked the slide back super hard, and finally knock the case out with a push rod.

Thankfully, He's fine...and the guns fine.

The case is marked WIN 9mm Luger, but IDK if it was a old, reloaded, or what....

Looks like that round was loaded a bit to hot. I would guess Reload..

Friend of mine and I were at the range, he was shooting his 92 using reloaded ammo he bought years before, and had a similar issue. Case cracked and slide got stuck. We got it open the same way as you, and he asked me if I wanted the rest of the ammo. I took it to pull the bullets, dump the powder and recycle the brass.
      Sorry, not sorry.

was it factory ammo? could have been a light load and the pressure spike blew out the unsupported part of the case head.

was the barrel or slid damaged at all? that would lead me to believe it was a hot load, kinda hard to double charge 9mm and still seat without being noticeably long.

Kinda looks like it might not have gone all the way into battery, and separated when fired.

Maybe the case was "glocked" and not sized properly? Hard to know for sure...

My *guess* is fired OOB/case unsupported at the head. Look at the pic of the case on the lower right side of the page here

check the remaining rounds for bullet setback. That is much more common than a double or triple charge with a hot powder

glad that nobody got hurt & that the gun is fine...

I agree with others, looks like it was OOB, Glocked brass, worn out brass or most likely a combination of...

but what I don't understand is how do you not know what you are running through the gun.

I missed something here. 9mm luger is 9x19 correct?

                  I have seen:
                  9x19 (luger or parabellum)
                  9x18 (largo or makrov)
                  9x17 (.380)

Am I wrong in this? I only loaded 150 9mm but I thought that the above was correct without giving it a lot of thought.

yes you are correct 9mm Luger is 9x19

& on a side note... 380 sucks!!! especially when you have 380 brass mixed with your 9mm.

                      9X18 is not 9mm Largo, 9x23 is. 9mm makarov is 9X18 and is slightly larger in diameter than 9X17 (.380), 9X19 (9mm luger) and 9X23 (9mm largo).

Just started on 9mm. Been doing 40,45,and 38 for a while.
I will second the comment on having a .380 case mixed in with your 9mm.
It makes for an interesting looking finished product.
I also would look into the setback theory. Before I start a new caliber I always try to read what I can find on these forums and remember some debate on "lightly crimp your 9mm" and "crimp just enough to prevent setback" vs. "don't under crimp, it will cause setback"
Glad no one was hurt. I'd tear that baby down and clean/inspect the heck out of her.

                          Try a .22 inside a 380 inside a 9mm inside a 40S&W inside a .45ACP

So I inspect the rounds as I put them in the 100 round plastic boxes. It's easier to just let them look pretty in a bag but boxing them gives me the chance to look them over. Early on, this would allow me to catch the occasional high primer.
                              Now it's just habit.
