How to you make a load for precision ammo for an ar? I know with a bolt gun you have to file the optimal coal and load but how do you do this for a semi automatic?

I would say that precision load for AR sounds more like an oxymoron, but that might spark a flame war.
I would think that you just have to experiment just like any other rifle and load, cept make sure to bench it when you are testing.
Start with a powder/bullet combination that fits your barrel and that might be accurate for a lot of folks, then play with it a bit.7 Billion people on the planet. They aint ALL gonna astronauts. Some will get hit by trains...

making match or precision ammo is not a big deal.case prep is the same except i would recomend the use of a small base die in a match chamber.then check case length...1.75-1.760,reaming the primer pocket is a waste of time, so dont bother, just make sure the flashole is free of debris.your choice of powder should be one that is proven to be temperature stable...example,ball will provide bigger groups as ambient air temps get above70-75 degrees.varget is what i use ,some like reloader15,still others will use imr4895,but a temp stable powder is important.the bullet can be any high quality bullet provided you have the appropriate twist for your bullet choice.i have a krieger 1 in 7.7 20"service barrel and shoot hornady75gr bthp and 80gramax with 24.5 varget, muzzle velocity is 2800fps with 75 and a little more than 2700 with the 80.
my 75's are loaded mag length anf the 80's are loaded to fit the chamber,i will remove bolt carrier assembly, and using a bullet seated longer i will place into chamber to see if it sticks.if case sticks turn seating stem down to shorten oal .repeat until case doesnt stick or can be removed by picking out with finger nail.Keep it simple!Comment

Cool God info guys, just one more question in a 20" heavy barrel for the 400-600 yard range what weight bullet should I start with and whats the heaviest I should go?Comment

you can shoot 75/77s' ,but 80gr would be the best.i like the amax.you could shoot the sierra 80 or nosler 80 there almost identicle...the nosler is cheaper.the vld style bullets will require fewer sight changes, making it easier to track your zero as you shoot.
berger makes a 80.5 and 82gr bullet .i have tested the 80.5 ,but have not had good results due to bad conditions.the 82 is very good has given me excellent scores at the 600yd line.
barnes makes a 85gr,but again have not had good results in testing to know its potential.at 85gr a twist rate of 1/7 or less would be better.Last edited by highpower790; 09-14-2013, 9:21 AM.Keep it simple!Comment

Honestly loading for a bolt gun and a semi for LR target loads is about the same. Accept you just don't fire form and us the FL than just the neck sizing die.
But the principles would be that same. For a load google what are peoples preferred combos for what and see which fits your shooting and test them.
Only thing with semi tho when starting loads be more careful cause its easier to shoot on a squib. So jsut be more attentive for that.Comment
