I did look first but I did not find a topic on this so apologies if this has already been covered. (pun intended!)

When I reload, I use nitrile gloves. I do so because I know that I am not supposed to touch primers with my hands, it protects me..a bit...from the lead exposure and..that is what I was told ...but now I want to know more info.

Can other gloves be used? Say, food service gloves? Most of those are "slightly powdered"....is that a problem?

Why nitrile and not latex? Why not Playtex?

Touching primers? That's the least of your concern; safety wise. It's the solvent in the gun cleaners that are more harmful.

I think you are overthinking this. If you feel better with gloves there is no harm in it.

IMO nitrile is the best anyways. Not for protection, for tool use. The gloves are just better suited to be using hand tools. They don't stick to metal shafts of screwdrivers, allen wrenches, etc.

I guess I should clarify. The gloves are not to protect me from the primers..they are to protect the primers from me! Oils from the hands will kill a primer and then all you have made is a rock.

With my Lee press, I have what they call the "bird feeder" for primers. It works MOST of the time..but once in awhile I have to help the primer along.

I haven't deactivated a primer yet, but I have to admit I don't touch many. Just the strays that fall off the flip tray.

What DOES deactivate my primers is not cleaning the case lube off well enough.

Go to Harbor Freight and buy them on sale when they have them and then just use them for sorting dirty shells or decapping or lead browsing or whatever. I have a few boxes of them but I mainly use them when I sort brass. I have one of those 5 gallon bucket sorters that has three sizes in them and when my 5 gal gets near full then I start sorting them and the gloves come on. After they are sorted, I may or may not decap them depending on the caliber and how eager I am to reload them. I will also use gloves when I feel like just decapping and I have a bunch of shells I want to process. The glove goes on and away we go. Nitrile is very nice. Either the blue or latex will work though.

Some people are allergic to latex. I use the Harbor Freight nitrile gloves for brass sorting and thats about it. Handling cases without gloves is part of my inspection process.

Also, gloves aren't tin foil hat material. Double base propellants contain nitro-glycerin. If you don't need to take ng, then don't take it by skin absorption.

Who touches powder?? Powder Container pour powder into powder measure, reload, when done pour powder from powder measure back into container.

I like the blue Nitrile coz they're sexy. Sexy in that the moly lube on the bullets doesn't get on my fingers, so when Wifey comes home, I rip off my gloves & run my hands all over her body while I kiss her hello.

They are also strong enough for a couple uses. The Playtex get too warm.

I have handled thousands of primers with my bare hands and never killed one. The key is to keep your hands clean and free of oils/lubes. If I have to handle primer(s) I double check my hands for oils and clean them if necessary. Simple precaution and all is good.

Besides I perspire way to much with rubber/latex/nitril gloves on anyway.

I use nitrile gloves because the latex gloves make my hand stink and nitrile is better suited for chemicals for when I'm cleaning my guns. I just buy a huge 2 box set from Costco and I'm good for a long time. I mainly use them so I don't expose myself to the gun cleaning solvents and the lead base on my FMJ bullets and when sorting brass. I figure, gloves are cheap, why take a chance.
