Since you shoot the round so much, I'm surprised you don't know it's REALLY not called 45 Long Colt. The round is called 45 Colt, period.

The only way I know to replicate factory loads is use the same powder they use, which may not be available commercially. I have found if you use a 230 or 200 gr RN and 231 pwder, you can use 5.2-5.6 grains and be safe. You should load a dummy round and see which OAL feeds well in your pistol. I use Bear Creek 200gr SWC with an OAL of 1.230. It feeds perfectly in my Para, Kimber, and XD-45 Tactical. My .02

        Original name
The designation ".45 Long Colt" originated amongst military personnel to prevent confusion with the smaller .45 Schofield. It has become a widely used alternative name for the cartridge, and adopted by Colt for use in designating the chambering in its own Single Action Army revolvers.
Thats a difference of opinion. One which you have not learned i guess. If there was only one 45 then it would possibly be the 45 colt. however with 45 Acp, 45 Schofield, 454 Casull. Then putting them all side by side. Except for the little 45acp. The others could be grabed hastidly incorrect. Thus the 45 Colt is now Refered to as the 45 Long Colt.

Oh yes you are right i do shoot a lot of 45 Long Colt and i know the history and usefullness of the round. Thank you.

The round originally was called 45 Colt. Today, even Colt calls it 45 Long Colt.

The was actually for a brief period the 45 Short Colt. Not 45 Schofield but actually 45 Short Colt. Basically the Schofield case with the smaller 45 Colt rim. This was developed in an effort to steamline and standardize a 45 cartridge that would function in both the Colt and Schofield revolvers that were in the military inventory at the time. The 45 Colt would not function in the Schofield revolvers due to the OAL being too long for the cylinder. The 45 Schofield would not fit in the Colt cylinder because the rims would overlap. Thus the 45 Short Colt was created.

Only problem was that it didn't quite work. The 45 Colt rim is quite small and sometimes it would slip off the star extractor of the Schofield revolver and the round would get caught under the extractor. That could be a major problem if it happened at the wrong time....

The 45 Short Colt died, the Schofield revolvers were sold off (many to Wells Fargo) and everyone went back the the 45 "Long" Colt.
              Luck favors the prepared.

The original battle plan did not survive initial contact with the enemy.

"The things that will destroy America are prosperity at any price, peace at any price, safety first instead of duty first, the love of soft living and the get rich quick theory of life." -Theodore Roosevelt
