Why Dillon not good

I have been told by many people:
Do not get a DILLON if you want to reload 308 for rifle.

Why? Please support your arguments

I reload .308 on a dillon, no real problems. My 1919 doesn't like them but that is a die issue not a press issue. Did they site what their problem was or were they just blowing smoke. Generally if I advise someone against something I list my reasons so they can make their own informed decision rather than just taking my word for it.

As long as you know whats going on at every stage, and can modify your system according to what you want to accomplish (like sizing only, not priming using the press, etc.), then the Dillon is fantastic. It will work well for most all reloading, including bottleneck rifle calibers.

Does the same go for .223? I am very interested in possibly the 1050 or the 650...

Loading 223 on the Dillon is a snap. I size seperately and trim, but from there, it goes very fast. A 1050 with all the bells and whistles will make it even faster and easier.

Was the reason they told you that because they said you cant load realy precise ammo on a dillon? What are you looking to load for? PLinking ammo or 1000 yard precision ammo? Really the only thing holding back a dillon from producing precision ammo is the powder dispenser. You can charge all the cases by hand and then put them in the press by hand but that is time consuming and you definitely wouldnt want to buy a 1050 or even really a 650. The 550 would be best if that is what you are doing because if you are hand charging the cases you will never use the case feeder. I load .223 and 9mm on my Dillon 650 and it does great for both. I load my precision ammo on a single stage though because that way I can be absolutely sure that my powder charges are consistent.

For what caliber?

When I load 9mm I get about .1 deviation or even less.

When I load .223 I get around .3 deviation and even worse if you dont pull the handle the same way every time. I am using ramshot Tac powder which is very fine and should meter very well.

With 748, h335 and other ball powders, I get around .2, which is OK by me for most stuff. With long grain extruded powders, it can be as bad as .5 grain. Not good enough if extreme accuracy is your goal.

All I'll say is this. The US Palma team and David Tubb load there ammo on a Dillon XL650 and 550B respectively. The Palma team in 308 and David Tubb in 6XC (modified 22-250, although now you can get the brass) and I think their records and performance speak for themselves.

As for 1050 vs. 650, I have 2 1050's and will say that as much I love my 650, reloading on either 1050 is just being spoiled.

I seriously have thought of rigging up a RCBS Chargemaster with a long funnel to my 650.

as has already been stated it's pretty much just a powder metering issue. And that is only in specific setups. I most of my precision and all load development in a single stage, almost everything done for volume is on a 650.

Set the load at 22.0gr of H322 and after 150 it still measured 22.0gr exactly (a couple of midway checks were also right on). Of course, different powders may affect this but I get the same accurate result for H322, Varget and several pistol powders. I do not know how to explain why some cannot achieve acceptable powder accuracy with the Dillon.

There is no way in hell you are getting perfect measuring with varget every time. I can understand you get very close with H322 and pistol powders though. Like i said earlier, i use my 650 to load .223 and 9mm but from my experience, the more powder you try to measure at once with the dillon measure the more inaccurate it gets. In my opinion its not "IDEAL" for precision loads in its stock configuration. I believe the OP is asking in regards to .308 caliber and not smaller calibers such as .223 and pistol calibers where the metering isnt as much of an issue.
