    Defective TULA Primers

    At the range yesterday:

    1. 84 .38 Special reloads shot through a S&W 686 -- 8 TULA primers failed to detonate
    2. 51 9mm reloads shot through a Glock 17 -- 3 TULA primers failed to detonate.

I can't see anyway to categorize this sort of failure rate as anything but a defective product. I have shot thousands of CCI 500 primers and can't recall one failure to detonate. Beyond having to deal with the safety issues at the range, having to pull a number of bullets is aggravating.

Anyone have any experience dealing with the retailers on this issue? Will they accept the primers back for a credit towards another brand of primer?

From my understanding you cant return primers like you cant return alcohol.

That’s my guess… my money is on the OP not seating the primers correctly.

I use a bunch of Tula, CCI, and Winchester… out of the 3 the Tula is the most difficult to seat. I no longer use them on my progressive, but results with a hand priming tool are fantastic.

        Never had any failures.

I seat my Tula sp primers just fine and I get 1-2 duds per 100. No issues with any other Tula primer.

My experience was I got hang fires with my first batch of Wolf 223 primers.

Either I didn't seat properly or it was due to not tumbling the lube off.

I ended up hand priming and using my press to really get them seated in there, and never had another problem.

FWIW. I've heard guys could no longer return Wolf primers to the importer or distributor , can't remember which.

              Thanks

Thanks for the replies. Before I bought the TULA primers I read the comments on them here in the forum. Because a number of folks mentioned the need to seat them sufficiently, I was very careful in the seating of all of the primers. According to my micrometer, there is NO difference in depth between the rounds in which the primers did or did not detonate. All of the strikes are deep and well-defined. In my opinion, someone buying TULA primers is paying 100% for something like 90% of product--and is buying all of the concerns about safety and the trouble involved in pulling the dud rounds.

I would not advise anyone to buy TULA SPPs.

I just bought and shot about 4k Tula primers in the last 2 months. I only had 3 that didn't go bang. Paying $28 per k, You won't catch me crying about it.

Just because all the primers show the same seating depth doesn't indicate that you did it correctly... could be a combination of reasons you are having problems.

Primer seating depth, hammer spring may be light, cup hardness… You need to bottom out those primers so you get hard contact with the anvil.

Do you have a hand priming tool by any chance? My hand priming tool seats deeper than my progressive with the priming depth maxed out.

Is there an "E" in the part number on these, i.e. lead free primers. I bought 5000 LPP in the lead free config, and am having about a 4 to 8 % fail to fire rate on them-even after multiple strikes-it's not a seating issue. I'm through about 2000 of them now, and failure rate has not changed

I'm nearing my 2.5k mark using Tula primers and can only remember 2 fail to go off. I gave 100 primers to a friend and he had light strikes with about 25% of them, he said he had a lighter striker spring installed on his Glock.

For me, Tula primers are good to go, although I wouldn't discount the possibility of a bad batch.

Interesting point about the lighter spring in a Glock. That is what is happening to me. I have zero problems with the sp primers in 40.

A Tula primer destroyed the firing pin on my SKS some time ago. Pierced primer = bent firing pin.

Luckily the damage was limited to the pin itself, and Murray's got me up and running in no time.

Ive never had a problem with tula besides not seating enough but like someone mentioned it went off after another try or two. The ones I have had fail to fire completely are the CCI primers I had my firing pin go through the primer and still not fire. More than likely its not seated deep enough or it was contaminated some how

I'm having ftf with wolf srp @ 4-5 every hundred. I'd get a funky yellowish ball of un burned powder.
