    44 mag load data

I just scored a set of lee dies (all I could find local) for the 44 mag and like everyone else, I grabed what projectiles I could find awhile back. I got 2 boxes of 200gr XTPs. I have not had a chance to get or even look hornadys book. I was hoping someone can look in there hornady book and let me know what is says about those bullets.

On hand I have lil gun and blue dot. I also have CCI 300 & 350

I will be using in a pistol and thanks for your help.

Excellent bullets. Especially for hunting. Very accurate. I load them with a stout load of H-110 and mag primers. Taken several deer and a huge black bear with that combo in a Super Blackhawk and a Redhawk.
A 30cal will reach out and touch them. A 50cal will kick their butt.

Keep lil gun out of 44 mag. I did not like that it scorched my shells on the starting loads. For that matter 800x also scorched my .45 acp loads at 6.5gr...

Blue Dot on the other hand. As much as I do not care for it I love it. I actually went on a loading spree with my blue dot just to use up two bottles because I did not care to have anymore of it, then I found that it works great in 45 acp as well and I have enjoyed using it. Blue dot is a good work load. It aint flashy like a h110 load but it gets the job done. The BoLy has loads for the XTP as does the BoLee if I recall correctly.

Hornady does list both Blue Dot and Lil Gun for the 200 XTP, both starting at 1300fps but Lil Gun topping out higher than Blue Dot. If it were me, I think I would try 15 grains of Blue Dot.

          Blue Dot - 13.8-17.1
          Lil Gun - 20.7-27.1

I have that bullet intended for .44 Special, and you could do that with the same die set.

I just got a 629-6 out of jail. Sinclair had the Redding dies in stock. I've been reloading 9mm and .45 ACP and have a decent supply of Titegroup and Unique on hand. I've got both 200 & 240 JSP's and some Starline brass. Has anyone used either of these powders with these bullets?

.44 Remington Magnum revolvers, and even the Contender, usually respond well to Winchester 296 / H-110 powder (the same powder in different packaging) or Alliant 2400, with 200-250 grain jacketed bullets. A magnum pistol primer is needed along with a heavy roll crimp. If the roll crimp isn't heavy enough accuracy will suffer drastically, this proved true for me across Dan Wesson's, S&W 29's, Ruger Super Blackhawks, Ruger Redhawks, a Seville and Contenders. To get consistent crimp tension I measured and trimmed all brass to the same length as the shortest in any lot. My preference is for Starline brass as it has proven to be the most consistent available.

Do not substitute standard primers for a magnum primer, especially with W-296/H110.

I used cast plain based and gas checked bullets from:

The .44 Magnum loaded with a cast 240 grain Keith style bullet over 8.0 - 8.5 grains of Unique and a standard primer is a great target load that won't beat your hand into a red throbbing claw. Have fun!
