Range report on the 800x 45 acp...

Damn powder. Now only does the powder not play well with the powder dropper, it also does not play well with the chronograph.

Chrono is a Comp Electronics PROCHRONO Digital w/sun screens.

    Constants:
    two mags 15 shots
    230gr .451 Xtreme Plated RN
    Tula LPP
    Mixed Brass
    COAL is 1.250 (minor fluctuations)
    Powder = 800x
    Shot at Steele pEaKE
    TRP Operator Full Rail
    5.x" barrel
    Custom trigger
    VZ grips.

    RAW numbers
first set: 6.5gr charge- 13/15 registered:
    797 793 807 3574 806 809 3642 800 3115 810 822 811 815
Clearly the powder is not only hard to measure but also hard to chrony...
I was fairly straight with these loads. I aimed for 6.5 and usually kept it at 6.5 with a couple of 6.52 or 6.48 in there.

second set: 6.8gr charge- 15/15 registered:
    819 866 866 854 852 2795 3122 865 855 873 865 2923 890 856 833
Yeah I was a tad more lax with these allowing loading weights in powder going from 6.78-6.86 sometimes but I aimed for 6.8 and usually was happy with 6.78-6.84.

This powder seemed to behave a tad like LIL GUN. I found scorch marks on the brass and was not a happy camper. I did notice that this speed needs to get kicked up a tad more. I think maybe 7 gr should be okay. I might also go for a 185gr prn next time. These did have a nice feel and I think the felt recoil WAS a bit more than the typical WST loads that I was making.

    Your first string Lo: 711, Hi:822, Av:803 Es:111, SD:31.4 11/15 read properly
    Second string Lo:819, Hi:890, Av:858, Es:71, SD 18.3 12/15 read properly

You need to learn how to delete individual entries on the chrony, or just transfer the readings to a notebook and use a spreadsheet to do your calculations.

Throw out the 819 reading from the second string and your Extreme Spread is 57 fps (6.6%) and your Standard Deviation is 14.3 fps (1.6%) that's pretty good.

Your loads aren't bad, your chrony is. Learn how to delete obviously erroneous readings from it. I have this happen with my shooting chrony once in a while and simply ignore readings like 2000-3000 fps from a pistol or 400 fps from a rifle.

You might want to back the chrony away a little to prevent muzzle blast from tripping it.

I think you have a pretty good load there with 6.8g of powder.

800x also makes a fine shotgun powder . With that, you won't mind +/- 0.5g variation so long as you aren't trying to go warp speed with your loads.

What seems to be the problem (not playing well with Chrony)? Has nothing to do with powder.

WELL thank you for those kind words. Normally I would leave out the clearly obvious double charged loads in there (yes that is sarcasm). I was about 5-7' back away from the chrony. I did not measure but oh well. SIGH, also, let me explain please... The powder NOT PLAYING NICE WITH THE CHRONY was me being sarcastic again because the powder jumped all over the place with the LNL dropper and likewise since some of my readings were all over the place I just felt like blaming the powder because, well, it did not plead the 5th so it must be guilty... (I know, I should have had my sarcasm font turned on, mah bad)

They did feel snappy. Like, a little more than a little snappy. But I just got back from Lotions and Lace right now and I have with me a Pink Hollow Point Bullet Vibrator that I am gonna attach to the measuring tube of the LNL and then to the Lee if that fails just to see if it will work. It only cost me $20 but it was the most powerful one they had and I felt that it would be a better candidate then the Frisky Finger. It also has about 5 settings. If all goes well then I will consider getting a rechargable for $90 later on down the line... Till now, this thing supposedly eats batteries so I hope that it works.

Your issue is with the muzzle blast confusing the chrony. 5-7 feet from the chrony is too close. 12-15 feet is the usual distance suggested. As for load variations, you are less than 1% off. I've used both 700x and 800x with good results, usually keeping 230gr at 800fps.

Yeah I have that problem. But the truth is that the further back I stand, the more tempted I am to shoot the chrony in the face. So I tend to stand close for it's safety... (cause I hate that damn thing) Next loads I will back off a bit more.

Are you shooting off of sandbags or offhand standing up?
If it's #2, you are a braver man than me. I use a gun vice with a rifle and shotgun and sandbags with a pistol. There's no way I'd shoot through a chrony with a handgun while standing, but I also have a weakness for jerking the pistol down in anticipation of recoil which isn't healthy for the chrony.

So you're paying an extra $110 in order to get that 800X to work for you eh? You might be near the point of offering a scalper $200 for 8# of Unique

But seriously, 860 fps is a pretty hefty load. 230 mil FMJ is typically only 830-850 fps.

More likely, I'd suspect lighting...not getting a good consistent bullet shadow.

                    Yes. Not really.

Yes I was standing. I went to Steele Peakea and backed up to the range after a small job and saw that it was kinda hot and very bright. I was by myself and I did not care to be there for very long. So I setup the tripod and chrono so that I had a bottle to aim at about 60 yards away and stood about 5-7' away and shot through the triangle. That is the way that I have always shot through my chrono. Normally I just try to aim for the middle, but this time there was a green looking 2 liter bottle way in the distance so I figured that if I positioned the chrono properly it would give me a decent target to aim at.

As far as the uhhh, modification to my press goes, if it works out then I will prolly use it on a LOT of powders. Not just 800-x. All the dots and wavy flakes like that that do not like to meter well. SO really it is a general press upgrade that I will be testing in a few minutes.
