Boxed 1938 German 8mm amo.

Can anyone give me a idea on exactly what I have here? It is stamped on the box "Waffen ss Dermaitung?? It's very hard to make out the lettering. Any idea what these would be worth? Any help would be appreciated.

You have some German made 8X56R ammo.

There is a bit of this ammo around. As far as the SS stamp and the Himmler stamp on the box, I believe these are fake/phony stamps placed recently on the box by some unscrupulous seller trying to pass off the ammo as some super rare SS marked ammo.

...because its for Steyr Mannlicher rifles, not 8mm Mausers.

You'll notice the 8x56 will have a rim around the base of the cartridge. That particular round will not fit in the Mauser magazine if you try to put it in there.

The pill is also a .330 OD for 8x56 compared to .323 for 8x57.

Numbers of these rifles also saw use in World War II, particularly by second line, reservist, and partisan units in Romania, Yugoslavia, Italy and to lesser degree, Germany.

Got this off of wiki, but if Germany issued the steyr to second line reservists it would make sense.

yep, 38 Austrian manufacture 8x56r Hungarian Mannlicher for m95 mannlicher rifles converted to the "S" patronen. early ones were in 8x50r but nevertheless, I would guess the SS stamps are BS. I have a bunch of that ammo i'm hanging on to as I imagine it will increase in value. clips can be found on ebay and Prvi Partizan now sells loaded ammo, brass, and bullets to reload for this rifle which is what I would recommend, rather than shooting up corrosive and potentially valuable old ammo. reloading for this round takes some work, i'm finding, as it's very sensitive to powder, load density, etc.
