Best 9mm ammo to take down a bear

9mm is still better than a sharpened stick and some foul language.
I wouldnt use hollowpoints, chances are they will fully expand and stop in the skin.
Buffalo Bore 9mm +P Penetrators is probably closer to what you would want:
9mm Luger (+P+) PENETRATOR Field Proven pistol and handgun ammo. Maximum firepower ammunition. Best ammunition for pistols and handguns for sale. Buffalo Bore. Strictly big bore. Strictly Business.
Even then you would have to have some serious skill to drop a bear with it.
You could also consider staggering rounds FMJ/HP/FMJ/HP...and so on
I've just been doing some research as I am traveling to Montana for vacation next week. Hoping I wont encounter a grizzly. I'm taking all my firearms for my siblings to shoot and the best round I have for a bear is 12ga slugs & buck shot. But I'd rather not have to fight a grizzly bear. At least Ill have high capacity mags for my AR15 & steel core rounds, and again AIM FOR THE HEART!
I'll also be getting some bear spray when I get to Montana!Last edited by Neff; 06-30-2013, 4:35 PM.Know guns, Know peace, Know safety. No guns, No peace, No safety.Comment

Aiming for the heart in a bear charge is real smart. The bear will die.....shortly after it kills you and anyone else it can in the time it takes for it to die. Which is way too long if you are on the receiving end from it.
You need to do better research if this is what you came up with. It clearly shows you have never hunted, or at least killed enough animals to know a heart shot will not anchor/stop in its tracks an animal. Especially one in a rage.
Got to love all the armchair quarterbacks.A 30cal will reach out and touch them. A 50cal will kick their butt.

For all you jerk off know it all douche bags out there. It is possible to take down a bear with a 9mm. I know someone that has done it, although it did take him 3 mags and no they were not the CA legal ones. It was an incident where the bear rushed him and his 30-06 jammed and that's all he had left. I definitely think a 9mm is better than nothing and that's exactly why I'm taking my 9mm to Montana as backup.Know guns, Know peace, Know safety. No guns, No peace, No safety.Comment

Have you read up on bear safety? Stuff like make noise while you hike a trail, so you are less likely to surprise a bear. I seriously doubt you will be threatened by a bear. However, your food will. Rather than a gun, carry a bear canister for your food. Then you will be able to eat enough to hike back out. Bears LOVE to steal your food when you backpack. Worry about that. Solve the likely problems, not the dramatic but excedingly unlikely ones.Comment

Im not saying a 9mm can't kill a bear. Im saying it isn't going to do **** to a charging bear unless you get lucky. Bears fight bears all the time, they get bit and keep fighting. I don't know, but I assume a bear bite is worse than a 9mm wound.
3 non cal mags is a minimum of 33 rounds that has to take at least 15 seconds to shoot with reloads if you are shooting extremely fast. How far was the bear charging from? Do you have any idea how fast and far a bear can move in 15 seconds?
things just don't add up
And for your earlier question about the heart thing. If you shoot the heart, the animal still has to bleed out to incapacitate it, this gives it 30 seconds or so to eat your ***. Even if you shoot a human in the heart with a small pistol caliber they are still likely to run away for a short distance. There are two ways to stop a charge. The first is physical damage to keep the animal from being able to walk, like broken bones. The best way for an instant stop is a brain shot. Just like the vital "T" on a human. And this is where the 9mm is limited, it doesn't have the power to guarantee penetration and shock wave damage.I will share my opinion and my load data, BUT I am just a guy with too many cigars and too many guns. Whatever I say is probably wrong.Comment

Wow this thread generated 4 pages of response????? lol anyways +1 on bear spray, not with a 9mm that requires multiple reloads to stop the angry bear. Its like a .22lr it will eventually stop a bear after X amount of shots but you are in immediate danger and needs the bear to stop asap.Comment
