    Mag primer or not to?

Okay. I was doing some research and found that Herco powder could be used in my 44 magnum. I believe it said 9.5gr-10.5gr with a max FPS at 1245. But my real question is. Can I use mag primer with it? Or is that more along the lines "Hell no you shouldnt" Obviously cause of over pressure. Help would be much appreciated!

You can, reduce your loads and check for signs of pressure.

I have used mag primers for years. No troubles. You will probably get better accuracy. I have found no need to reduce powder charges. If you are looking for hot loads get H-110 and be sure to use mag primers.
A 30cal will reach out and touch them. A 50cal will kick their butt.

Develop that load with your particular primer you shouldn't have any trouble.

What he said. If you already have a load developed that's at or near max, you can back off a few tenths of a grain and work it back up. Check for any pressure signs.

+1 except for the YEARS part, I second everything else.

Primers ARE a ford/chevy debate at just about EVERY angle. If reloaders aint *****ing back and forth about the brand and cup then they are *****ing back and forth about magnums vs regular. We all know that magnums are bigger, that is why they fit looser on some folks, not me, they just fit almost as tight, but that little extra size helps some of us out...

Sorry, I got off track... I mean, you will hear many folks say go ahead and swap out magnums for regulars if you want, they really do not do much. FROM what I have seen, I agree. Here is where you might wanna stick with magnums though, when you load 44 mag with blue dot or H-110, use magnum primers if you notice unburned powder all over your arms and face. My Deagle likes to cough and spit on me when I shoot it. I guess it thought I bought it to be a safe queen and it is mad that it never sees the safe...

SO, to recap, use magnums to help clean up the mess or impress the ladies...

Thank you for all your help. I will go ahead and stick with magnum primers then. Was just curious how Herco will handle in my Ruger 44. Trust me I love my H110 powder. For me its by far the best I have shot so far, but I wanted to expand a little and see if Herco isnt better? Considering Herco uses what.. 10gr middle ground vs H110 at 24grs I been shooting.

One of my old time reloading buddies loved it.

I think I have a bottle or herco. I got it for 44 mag too. I got it along with lil gun, bullseye and a few others when I was testing other powders looking for something that might be better than blue dot. I never really made many more rounds though, I think I am happy with blue dot and h-110. My DEagle sure like the 24.5gr H-110 anyways...

I started off with Blue dot myself. Sadly For me I wasnt impressed. Even with a tight crimp, magnum primers, Still got un burnt powder everywhere. I switched to H110 and couldnt be happier. However like I said I like to try new things now and then to see how things are. Plus having problems with powder shortages around me.
