Where is the ammo?

This month's issue of the American Rifleman had a good article on why he thought there were shortages and made sense too. The basic thought of the article is that it's not the government purchases since there is so much being produced but it is the fault of everyone that is buying out of fear that is causing the shortages.

Meanwhile here's something I've seen more of lately; how many older collector/enthusiasts are not even bothering (much) with the hobby anymore because of this - I know two of them at work alone. Not to mention noobs who just don't want to be bothered and never look back. How many of them won't know or, care to know, how to vote come election time?

Hope my fears aren't as fulfilling as our prophecies.

Why, didn't you know that it's in the millions of ammo cans, surplus boxes, and safes of all of us who hoarded it before this crunch came along?

I can confirm this right here. Ive stopped looking for surplus guns, stopped looking for components, and I don't even walk over to the ammo section of any store anymore. I find myself playing around with my RZR instead of shooting. Tying flies instead of reloading. I hope it ends sooner than later.

I too had a problem finding ammo for my G21. Couldn't find it online or at retail outlets in my area. Eventually I came across Streichers, Gunbroker, and Bulkammo. Gunbroker is an auction site. If you're patient you can get some fairly good deals there. They seem to open the door to many opportunities for ammo at reasonable prices. Remember tho, don't bid on too many things at one time because if you win you are expected to pay up. In the case of Streichers and Bulkammo if they say they have it they have it and the prices are good. Ammo can be shipped into Calif to most places. Be safe.

So many factors are in play. Panic buying, hoarding, new shooters, people buying anything to sell at a profit. Some stores are taking advantage of the situation and charging ridiculous, inflated prices. Remember this when the supply returns to normal and DO NOT SHOP AT THOSE STORES. I have seen a box of 9mm FMJ target ammo online at CTD for $69.99. Meanwhile I got the similar product at a local gun shop for 17.99 but they were imposing a 2 box limit to make sure many customers got a chance to get some. Frankly I applaud this action.

Folks, if you don't already reload, then please, get set up to do so. It's neither that hard nor that expensive. I reload and have ZERO ammunition supply problems, and I shoot .45 Colt. Good luck finding that at your local Wally World affordably.

Guns are becoming more available. And components? Everything is out there, and I mean everything, and at reasonable prices. Just have to look, brother. I shot almost 800 rounds this weekend, no reason you can't too.
