My lgs had some 800x (imr) on the shelves so I decided to pick some up. During my research I found that it works better with a heavier bullet. So that being said...I decided to try it with my 9mm loads. Following the cookbook, it said 4.5 to start but my research said start at 5.5. So to be safe I loaded at 4.9 (115gr) it shot but would not cycle, so I went back and loaded to 6.1 (Max was 6.5) and it shot like a champ. Then I loaded some 124gr at 6.1 (the same parameters as 115gr) and it too shot very well, with a little more felt recoil. I think I can bump them down a little say 5.7-5.9 and it should be ok. So again if you see it on the shelf, pick it up. It's a funny looking powder, looks like fish food. Hope this helps, enjoy!

Yeah it wasn't my first choice. But it's been fun trying different powders.#blackriflesmatter

Yeah & its also good to know that if you NEED powder, and powders are as scarce as they are now, you can always use 800X. After trying Titegroup, WST & WSF in my 124gr 9mm loads, I use WSF exclusively now. You can load it from mild to +P velocities, and it maintains great accuracy the whole time. Once I figured out that WSF is my go-to powder for 9/40/45, I started buying in bulk. One 8lb jug of WSF will load up from 10,000 to almost 12,000 rounds of 9mm, depending on my charge weights.Comment

Yeah you really have to hand weigh 800-x since it meters like paper plates, but the stuff is legendary (perhaps accidentally so) in the 10mm crowd for maximum power, thermonuclear stuff. Exceeding 1500 FPS with 135 grain bullets in a subcompact 10mm Glock is usually enough to motivate people to go through the trouble, I imagine it'd get boring for bulk loading of 9mm, but I'm not surprised that it works.
I was hoping to standardize around Power Pistol since it meters so well and works great for 9mm as well, but it wouldn't even touch 800x in 10mm, so I still keep a bottle or two of 800X when I want to make the crazy stuff.Comment

180grn .40 and 9.6 grn charge
This was the pet load of a friend of mine on the high road so i thought id give it a shot (Even went to great lengths to find a pound of 800x).
The other problem might be the stock recoil spring.
Im gonna work up my own load, and if i dont find a happy medium between velocity and accuracy (Without having to weigh every charge) then im giving longshot or blue dot a tryLast edited by Dark Mod; 04-16-2013, 10:08 AM.Comment

800x works great in 10mm if you are willing to put up with the terrible metering. That of course doesn't work for me as I don't load my handgun rounds with a drop and trickle technique (I do enough of that with my 308 rounds using 4064 and I am only loading 30-40 of those per batch).
I much prefer Longshot, AA #9, Bluedot and VV-N105 (some of the foregoing meter a little better than others (AA #9 the all time metering winner), but all meter well enough to load to my max in 10mm on my progressive). That cannot be said of 800x.When asked what qualities he most valued in his generals, Napoleon said, "give me lucky ones."Comment

Longshot & Blue Dot usually give very similar results with any given bullet, but in my testing, Longshot had the edge in velocity (within published loads). Longshot also meters better and I use about 1.5gr-2gr less powder comapared to Blue Dot, to get a 180gr or 200gr to the same velocity.180grn .40 and 9.6 grn charge

Try 9.2gr Longshot under a 180gr bullet. For me, it doesn't get any better for an everyday, full power 10mm load. It's not nuclear, but it's got plenty of punch & it's dead nuts accurate.
I also use Longshot now for my 200gr WFNGC woods/hunting load. My 800X load was WAY over max, and I was averaging 1350fps out of a 6" barrel. I worked up to an average of 1415fps, but the brass was looking pretty scary. I came to the realization that I needed to stop trying to turn my G20 into a 41 Mag before I blew my hands off. A 200gr WFNGC @ 1150-1200fps is more than enough punch for anything you should realistically be shooting with a 10mm.Comment

Good info man, appreciated the insight. Published data for 800x is seriously deficient and all over the place. One manual says im just under max, and another one says im a full grain over max (max load listed only gets to 30k psi for some reason).Longshot & Blue Dot usually give very similar results with any given bullet, but in my testing, Longshot had the edge in velocity (within published loads). Im used to manuals being a little off, but for 800x its ridiculous, the Hodgdon website doesnt even list a minimum load.
Looks like its longshot for me, now i gotta find something to do with the rest of this 800xComment

Yeah the hodgdon manual lists 4.5 min for 9mm so I loaded it to 4.9 after some research and it wouldn't even cycle 4.9#blackriflesmatter

Bringing this up from the dead..
I'm new into reloading and am still in the research phase. I gathered what components I can and ended up with IMR 800x and 9mm - 115 RN HPCB from xtreme bullets.
Similar to the OP, I couldn't find data for this exact bullet combo setup but only have LRN data to compare to. Similarly, I've been finding posts of people sometimes going way over the listed 5.3gr max charge (modern reloading by lee), which gets me a bit iffy.
1. Regardless, I was still planning on starting at the min charge weight for the LRN, 4.5gr and work my way up, using the 9mm - 115 RN HPCB bullet. Anything wrong with this? Should I start at a higher charge weight like the OP mentioned?
2. Would I still use a min OAL of 1.1"?
3. I was thinking of trying to chrono some loads from commercial ammo, and trying to match my load speeds with commercial load speeds by adjusting the charge weight. Anything wrong with this? Or should I try and adjust charge weight to try and achieve a certain velocity?
4. What typical distance do you guys set your chronograph soup when measuring handgun loads?
Thanks guys.

WOW people here have such a short memory...
800-x was the reason why I attached a vibrator to my lock n load dropper.
Metered like a champ... Okay, it metered so well that I did about 300+ rounds at around either 5.8 or 6.8, I think it was 6.8gr for 230gr Plated .45 auto...
EVERYTHING hit between 6.6-6.9 IIRC.

Need GOOD SS pins to clean your brass? Try the new and improved model...
