I have a xl 650 dillon reloader. My head is about to explode trying to learn everything about reloading... apparently I have to purchase different Powder funnels, and shell plates in order to reload different calibers?? I thought this machine would be more universal out of the box.. with a two to three month wait on parts from dillon, fairly agravating I cant get started just yet.. What else do I need to change calibers other than Dies and funnels? Do I need a different shell plate? Im loading 308, 45, 44.. will 1 shell plate work for 45 and 44?? I would ask dillon but their too busy for a nube like me...

On an XL650 you'll need dies and a caliber conversion kit per caliber. It consists of a shell plate, powder funnel and 3 locator pins along with the parts for your case feeder. Some of these parts cross reference with other calibers (308 and 45acp use the same shell plate)
I generally figure just about $240 for a complete caliber swap including tool head and powder hopper, a little more if you need a different case feed plate and more yet if you want a powder alarm on each tool headLast edited by Rwnielsen; 03-26-2013, 11:29 AM.NRA Lifer/Endowment/Patron Member

Wait time from dillon is 4-8 weeks i helieve grafs constantly has them coming in each week and ships within a week of in stock orders. Dillon 650 is a great press i have one myself and juet ordered 2 more quickchange kits and another caliber conversion kit. They have a great customer service. If you cant get a hold of them through the 800# call the 480# i usually get in fairly quick. But i think it would be quicker to go through grafs. Also if you go to brian enos website you can find out which parts work for what calibers and you can also order parts through there. On the blue side

Im assuming that the shell plates are the same for 30-30, 308, 30-06..? as well as the conversion kits??
Rwnielsen, how do you know the shell plate for the 308/.45 is the same? I cant find any info on that..Comment

It appears that you hastily jumped into the fray without really doing your research and hoping everything would be peachy.
You're not going to learn 'reloading' in a weekend of afternoons, so prepare yourself accordingly.
If you want a 'fast learning curve' hobby, take up bowling.
If you screw up reloading, you can seriously injure, or even kill yourself, or your loved ones, so keep that in mind.
