Why no primers?

There is probably an answer I'm not getting. No one has primers, at least searching thru Yahoo. Now I get there is a panic buy going on. But everyday for the last 2 weeks, no one has any stock? The mfg's must be making them by the truckload. Or do they sell the minute the store gets them? It just seems like there would not be as much as a run on primers as ammo, because I'm sure the demand is not as big. Just frustrated because, as usual, I am getting into something a little to late.

I guess i can understand that, but I would think the mfg's would be running 24 hrs a day with more shifts if they couldn't keep up. But maybe they are and still can't keep up.

Just frustrated because, as usual, I am getting into something a little to late.

We went thru a primer shortage in '94, '08 and '09; lots of old timers recognized what was gonna happen, so they bought everything they could get their hands on. Newbies bought whatever was left; which isn't much as you're finding.

There is no scarcity of primers. Yes, they aren't available by the ten thousand right now, but if your Dillegent in your search, you'll get all the primers you need within 1 week. If you can't find them you aren't looking hard enough

Having reloaded for over 41 years.Back in the day,primers were well,not in very many places to buy.A few months back,they were still only in a handful of places to buy.
I have had friends asking me lately to buy some of mine.Should I sell?NO
Why they ask?I just bought 15,000 the other day from a online retailer.Do I sound like I am hoarding.It will take me 2 years to go through all those.I get them by having a network of friends looking as well.When called by a friend who was notified of them instock,I did not fuuk around.I bought all I could afford at the time.Among these other reloaders we will trade each other stuff.
Powder was great the other day as well.I bought stuff I will not use,but I know which guy to call.He has something I want.
Talk to some friends and get going.If your friends do not reload.Get new friends.
Like alfred said look harder.They do not stay in stock very long.
If you are near Apple Valley and have 22LR you can part with,I have something to trade.I wont make money on you and I expect the same from you.

Like everyone suggested, you have to be diligent in your searching and pay attention to this reloading board as well. There are a lot of nice people who post when something comes in stock at an online retailer. I have benefited from this and got my stocks up very well.

Primers take the longest to meet the demand. There are only 4 primer makers in the US, and there is a step in manufacture performed by a human. Everything else is fully automated. Rumor is that Winchester will have no primers for retail sale in 2013.

There are primers out there, you just have to be okay paying 2x to 3x normal costs. Check Gunbroker right now, primers galore.

I have bought a lot of primers over the past few months, but I had to spent a lot of time hunting for them, they are out there, but not from Yahoo. What is worth more, your time, or paying $60.00 to $85.00 per 1k for them?

I've been very successful with components and I'm a total noob to it. Just have to work it.

Put out notifications with every vendor who accepts them. Because most vendors are in the East or Midwest, have to get up very early (like 4:30) to check or they're gone in minutes.

Watch this board. a lot of very nice people post when they find something even if they don't need that particular item. I have, and I'm not even very nice.

Watch other forums. The Firing Line has done pretty well by me. 1911 pretty fair. Also Brian Enos, Glocktalk and etc.

Find something, order it if you need it and then post the link here so others can benefit as well. Find some thing you don't need? Post that too.

We've had our backs against the wall for a long time in this state. Just use the same skills you learned working guns, mags and ammo and adapt them to components and work it..

I've been able to procure some lately. I've been stashing them for future use. Although lately future use to me just means I'm shooting them now rather than later.

I buy when the price is good. Not panic prices. Then I buy as much as I can and save them. Still using some primers I bought 10+ years ago. I did buy 3K win large rifle mag primers in Jan for $36/K as I was working up loads for my Africa trip. I also bought Swift and Barnes bullets at non-panic prices which are still high for bullets. Been looking for IMR 7828SSC powder for a year. My buddy found some in Nev and got me 5 pounds.

The point is to plan ahead and stock up. As for the newbies -----well you are a large part of the current problem and tuff luck. In the future, when prices and supply is better, stock up and you will be fine on the next panic.
PS--For those that jumped on the reloading wagon and decide after the ammo supply is back they do not want to do it for whatever reason us reloader oldtimers will be here to buy your stuff at reduced prices of course.

What I was told was that all new primers go to the ammo manufacturers first and then to retail.
