that is a really old red neck trick... i have not seen that done since I was a kid. Also used to hear about old men loading split shot on fishing line and shooting what they would call "whistlers" (I have not a clue what you would use it for other than the noise) Where I grew up you always gotta worry when someone says " Hold my beer, I got an idea.."
