    TulAmmo Small Rifle Primers

Some of you may remember a back in late January when Powder Valley got Tula SRP in stock, well they finally showed up on Thursday and these are what I got. I've never used them before but have read enough good reviews I figured I'd try them.

However I want to make sure that these are ok for semi autos as I know Tula makes 3 different varieties of SRP.

Also I have read about people using SRP in place of SPP by just working up loads from min as the rifle primers are a tad hotter, is this ok to do? I would love to use these to load 9mm for my glock.

those work great in semi-autos, ive put about 500 or so through my ar with no problem. as far as using them instead of spp, i wouldn't do it just because ive been told numerous times by several people to not do it, but this is just my opinion and i bet people here have first hand experience and may be better help.

I have the NCSR-223 and so far, one primer failed to detonate even after being hit twice. Have shot 300+ rounds, so I guess too early to tell but....

I use wolf SRP's in my Glock 23 without any issues at all...

If you don't get them do go bang after being struck twice you are not seating them far enough into the pocket....

I found this out the hard way...

I know people use mspp in place of spp. But I would be carful with swapping rifle for pistol. Not saying it can't be done if that is all you can get your hands on, but I would look for loads that already have lower than average pressures. Then work them up, maybe from a little below normal starting loads.

THe single bad time I EVER had any issues with a Tula Primer was when it took 5 strikes to shoot outta my deagle. I just assumed that my deagle would not be eating any bad ammo so I kept pulling the hammer back and shooting it. Folks here said that the primer was not seated all the way and they could have very well been correct since it takes a lot of strength to sometimes seat them puppies properly. Tula ammo SUCKS but damn they make some great primers... Soon to be going on over 4000 rounds with no issues at this point...

I went for it with these primers in 9mm. So far so good, I loaded 30 rounds using range brass, 6.5g HS-6 under a 115g Montana Gold FMJ and the Tula SRP.
All 30 went bang, no signs of over pressure or primer flow. I will update once I have gotten a chance to load and shoot more.

Because the rifle primers have a thicker cup than pistol primers, primer flow will most likely not happen at pistol pressures.

Rereading this thread does remind me of one thing, I know some 9mm intended for uzis and other sub machine guns have very thick primers. They may be rifle primers in them.

As best I can figure, these are the primers with the normal charge and thinner cup.

I have the 223m which supposedly have the hotter charge and thicker cup.

Will they work in semi auto pistols? Only one way to find out! When I have some results, I'll report back

                    Thanks for the update!

edit: interesting point about the 9mm uzi ammo, I know there are issues shooting it from pistols, that sounds like a good explanation!

The only problem I ever had with my uzi ammo was that it failed to chamber in my taurus pt-92 and sometimes g-17.

ALSO, when I put the 8" barrel into the uzi I had stovepipes and jams all the time, but with the 16" carbine barrel back in (the way it was purchased) it shot pretty much flawlessly...

                        Update 3/21
I shot another 70 rounds of 9mm using 6.4g HS-6 with the Tula KVB-223 primers. 100% success thus far with zero issues. I plan to go into full production of this loading and shoot approximately 700 rounds of it in a Handgun class at the end of the month, I will update again after that point.

Thanks for the update. That's awesome they're working well. I still haven't tried any of mine out in my striker fired pistols. I think they'll work good enough for what I need, which is just range ammo so a FTF is a drill anyway so I don't particularly mind.

                              Update 3/30/13
Didn't burn through as much ammo as i had anticipated in the class, but i did shoot 440 rounds of these, 100% successful no issues, and more accurate than i am even out to 45 yards had no problem wacking the steel.

This may be premature, but i may never buy SPPs for my glock again.
