When you say middle of the road range round, I am assuming something in the 1000fps range? If so, the W231 at 5.5gr should be right in your wheel house.
Unique is another good choice, you will have to download it maybe 15-20% below Alliants charge weight but it will still go bang nicely, if a bit dirtier.
I would save the Blue Dot and #9 for when you get the itch to step on the gas a little more. Blue Dot and #9 are two of my favorite powders for 10mm, but I tend to load my 10's on the loud side.
Good luck, have fun. When asked what qualities he most valued in his generals, Napoleon said, "give me lucky ones." -
Reading accurate load data, I see a range between 12.2 - 13.6... Would a 12.7 load be a little "ballistic" recoil wise ?When you say middle of the road range round, I am assuming something in the 1000fps range? If so, the W231 at 5.5gr should be right in your wheel house.

I don't have my load data in front of me, it is down three flights of stairs, so will be a to mow thing, but I am guessing you will be in the 1150-1200fps with 12.7gr. So it shouldn't be too hot, hotter than any 45 auto but still very manageable.
The good thing about #9 is you probably can't put enough powder in the case to overcharge the round, very forgiving to load in 10mm.
Have a great time, 10 mm is really fun. When asked what qualities he most valued in his generals, Napoleon said, "give me lucky ones."Comment

I use blue dot for all of my 10MM loads, I tend to load near max though. Have not used anything else because Blue dot worked well so I did not feel a need to try othersComment

Win 231/hp38 is what i use for 10mm pretty effectivelyI support peace through superior firepower.

I've never made "middle" loads, but use Longshot and Bluedot for hot stuff. Works greatIt's ok to be jealous. We understand your animosity. We live the life you wish you had. And of over 4000 universities and over 1700 division 1 schools, only one is simply known as "The U"Comment

If you are using a fast burning powder for loading lead 10mm, be sure to keep your loads between minimum and middle of the road loading. In my experience loading a Delta Elite with 180gr lead and AA#2, once I got above mid level on the loading chart, the bullets started to keyhole. I switched over to the Zero brand 180gr JHP and got great results using AA#9. Accurate arms lists the max at well over 13 grains, but my experience showed that the max in my gun was 12.6 gr of AA#9. My best load was just below at 12.5 gr AA#9, Zero 180 JHP, 1.250", Win Lg Pistol Primer, Federal Cases. 10 feet from the muzzle, this load chrono'd at 1184 fps, which is respectable. Just because 12.5gr was safe in my gun doesn't mean its safe in your gun, so start low and work up. I have some middle of the road data for Blue Dot, but I'm at work right now so I don't have access to the data right now.Comment

Keep us posted with what your results are. Worked some rounds with 9.5gr of BlueDot , 5.5 231 and some 12.2 gr of #9. Will post results next week.I have some middle of the road data for Blue Dot, but I'm at work right now so I don't have access to the data right now.Looking 4" Python 686/ Redhawks, Les Baer.... Someone told me to give a try to some Longshot. I have two bottles now for 180gr RNFP but damn I forgot what the load data was. I will have to go look in the printer cause I might have printed it out. The Longshot is for a hotter load though.
Otherwise, It does not surprise me to see Blue Dot showing up. What about Green Dot or Red Dot? Them do about as good as Blue Dot?7 Billion people on the planet. They aint ALL gonna astronauts. Some will get hit by trains...

I always pick a powder on the slower side, and one that is impossible to double-charge without spilling out of the case.
Blue dot is one of my fav's, for loading high energy rounds. There are better ball powders for cleaner burning and less muzzle flash.
Blue Dot always looks impressive at an indoor range! Not the best for punching paper, but is for making hollowpoints expand.Last edited by JohnCCW; 02-23-2013, 12:40 PM.sigpicDon't ask how many guns I own, I lost count.

180gr jacketed and Longshot are a great combination. Start at 8.5gr - Max 9.5gr (according to Hodgdon) 1.260" OAL.Someone told me to give a try to some Longshot. Green Dot and Red Dot are a little fast for anything other than light plinking loads. Similar to running Bullseye, light recoil target loads they will work great. When asked what qualities he most valued in his generals, Napoleon said, "give me lucky ones."Comment

Yes. Now that I see the numbers I think it was said to go to about 9.2gr.
Cool. Thanks for that info. I will have to hurry up and make a recipe card and see what it does for me.7 Billion people on the planet. They aint ALL gonna astronauts. Some will get hit by trains...
