Reloading 45acp, 9mm, 40 cal

I'm looking for a single powder to load all 3 calibers with. I'm using Precision Delta FMJ. 230 gr for the 45, 115 gr for the 9mm and 180 gr in the 40. I'm leaning towards 231 or HS-6 from the data from my Hornady book and info on the net.
I know asking about powder choices is like asking who makes the best car, gun or anything else. LOL!! Any info from reloaders loading these 3 would be appreciated. Thanks in advance.......Mike

I don't load .40 but for 9mm and .45 I use unique, W231, WSF and WST.

As you suspect there are a lot of good choices. They group into fast (for lighter target loads usually), medium (all around performance, but not optimal in either target or SD), slow (usually best for SD or specialized competition)

I tend to load my handgun to higher velocities, so I favor slower powders. From Hodgdon, powders like HS6, WSF and Longshot tend to be my favorites, if I had to pick just one, it would be Longshot. Other powders like VV-N340, Power Pistol and Blue Dot, AA #7, all usually come in pretty well for me in your calibers.

If you are looking to load in the mid-range, powders like Unique and W231 are hard to beat. For faster Target loads, WST, Titegroup, Bullseye, Clays seem to be people's favorites.

231 is easy and safe meters great.
Bullesye and clays work great and will save you money but both are fast burning and have little room for error if you over charge.

My choice for a medium-fast powder is WW231. For a slow powder AA7 or HS6 are my choices. If I had to choose only one for general loading, it would be WW231. I have used it successfully for 9mm through .44mag for general loading. As Bill notes, for very stout loads, a slower powder will do better.

Just got to point it out, WST it my favorite target load. Light recoil, clean and no flash. 5.1gr under a 230gr .45 is a lot of fun.

I have loaded a lot of .45 and some 9mm with BE, I don't know about .40S&W

I like BE because you use less powder = more rounds per pound and I am cheep

FWIW W231 is going for $350 delivered for an 8# keg on gunbroker. Tough to find.

I use Titegroup for 9mm and will use it when I start loading .45.

I use 231 for all 3 calibers. It's very clean for 9, clean for 40, dirty for 45 FYI
