    Power Thrower

    Hi All-
I need a suggestion to what powder thrower to get. I have a Lee 4 Hole Turret press loading 38spl with TrailBoss.

My issue is the Hornady Auto Charge I use for my rifles takes for ever to drop 2.7-4.0gr of TrailBoss. (Even on fast it stops and trickles at 1.4gr)To the point I have primed 2/3's of my rounds while waiting for the loads to drop. So it takes me forever to run up 200 rounds.

Looking for something that will drop within .2+- consistently and quickly. This will only be used for 38spl so I am not worried about complicated setup so long as it will hold the correct charge.

    Thanks Guys

Oh and I am not tied to any manufacture but it would be nice if I could mount it to the press.

believe it or not i prefer this

i use it with my lee pro 1000 and lee dies. consistent and I've weighed out the powder dispensed every 7-10 rounds for consistency and haven't found that much deviation. VERY consistent with the disc measurements.

I use the RCBS Uniflow as well...

I also have the measure that came with the Pro 2000 progressive which has a micrometer insert and it’s always been easily adjustable and repeatable in throw...

I never used trail boss but it throws all my ball powders consistently.

If you want to mount to your press, go with the Lee Pro Auto Disk, or off press would be the RCBS Uniflow.

My go to powder measure is an old Redding. It throws even long stick powder within 1/10th, and any ball powder I've tried try is dead nuts every time. cant mount it to a press though.

              +1 to Cheep
Trail Boss is so outrageously bulky that if time to charge is important to you, you ought to simply use a dipper and funnel and scoop the stuff into the case. Trail Boss is meant to emulate a black powder charge when it comes to volume per load. If you don't have a dipper set, take a case and cut it to the appropriate height and solder a brass rod or thick wire to it to make a scoop.

Test out some loads. You'll see that you can easily hold 0.2g accuracy with a dipper, particularly with those big "Cheerio" flakes.

As usual, I agree with rsrocket1 and Cheep.

Dip it if you are OK with a semi-manual process or go with the Lee Auto Disk Pro if you want to automate the process. If you go with the Lee AD Pro, also buy the optional riser, it will space the hopper up and allow you to use the Lee safety prime setup on the press, then you will be cooking with gas...

BTW, best way to use auto-tricklers is to throw a charge a few grains under where you want it to be, put it on the scale driving the auto-trickler and let it just add the last few grains instead of auto-trickling the entire charge weight. This will greatly speed the trickling process.

I use the Pact digital scale/trickler system and even though it is a very fast auto-trickler I use my RCBS uniflow to speed the process by starting trickling with a powder pan with about 90% of desired charge weight in it already.

I've been using three powders in a Lee Pro Auto Disc-unique, w231 and trail boss. Of the three, trail boss works the best with an infrequent error rate of .05gr. Eleven out of twelve loads are usually right on the desired load.

If you get the auto disc, you should also get the adjustable charge bar. It makes dialing in the desired load weight a lot easier, not having to change discs to get the right charge weight. Also, the discs are fixed volume so you may have to settle for a load that is as close as possible with the disc......

Thanks for all of the responses guys. I think I am going to give the Lee Auto-Pro a shot. For the simple fact I can put it right onto my powder die and let it run.

Funny thing about powder chargers, if you look long enough you will begin to realize everyone hates all of them and loves all of them. So kind of a crap shoot I guess. 38spl and 308 are in the tumbler right now got to get back to loading.

And realized I am mental, just noticed I put POWER THROWER in the subject line.

Lee is pro should work great for you! Good choice.

I used it on my Lee pro 1000 up until the dillon 650 came walking through my front door. I still have the pro 1000 and would put it back into service in a heartbeat if needed.

Damn I thought this was a shotty thread...

I have to go with the above, To mount to your turret, that Lee Pro Auto Disk thinamajigger works GREAT until you start getting into 44 mag, or about 22+gr of h110. Then it sucks cause you gotta do all them gyrations and still trickle powder in cause the adjustable charge bar (GET ONE of THEM too!) stops at about 21.9gr. Yeah I guess you can use the double disk and what not but be real, those suck if you like to experiment and find loads like I do with the charge bar. I never used the disk setup, I started with the charge bar. LOVED IT! The only thing that irritated me over that whole setup was if I went to fast, It seems that I always had powder raining down on me. Even when I did not, I ended up having a gr or two of powder here and there.

Since I moved to the Hornady LNL powder dropper + linkage and now flaring, I have been a bit happier but that RCBs Unifliow caught my eye at first. I only got the lnl powder dropper because it was onsale and the uniflow I THINK did not have a case activated dropping system. Or maybe it was just more costly.

Anyways, The Lee is good and will not jack the balance up too much but if you do not get one, you might need the swivel and riser also so that it clears the primer setup if you run that.
