40 s&w vs 9mm, 45acp

I disliked the .40 for quite a while. Shot one one time and thought it was too snappy. One big advantage though is that the ammo is incredibly plentiful, so that is a big advantage.

I think its easy to see how the .40 has a leg up on the 9. The 9 will shoot a 147gr bullet at just under 1000 ft a second, and the 40 will shoot a 180 gr bullet around 1000 ft a second.

I decided to give the 40 another chance. I bought a Glock 22 and shot it last night. The 180 gr loads were actually very comfortable. The 155 and 165 definitely performed to the 'snappy' description of the cartridge. The 180 gr load is not only quite manageable to shoot, but I think its an excellent HD/SD option.

9mm will always be more comfortable to shoot, but the .40 allows you a heavier, wider bullet, traveling a bit quicker.

That being said, I definitely would not feel undergunned with a 9

Another thing with .40 is if you are a "gamer" then you can "make major power factor" easily with .40, but you have to push it with 9mm.

My next two questions are usually something like: "What pistols were you shooting in which calibers?"

To which the inevitable reply is "A glock 22 and a 1911."

40 is no more "snappy" than any other caliber. It has a lot to do with the weapon, the shooter, the load data, etc.

Old timers like .45s and there are PLENTY of old timers out there.

Gangstas like 9mm and they gotta shoot a LOT to hit the broad side of a barn so they buy just as much if not MORE than the old timers. (gots ta practice YO!)

.40 Is the ideal caliber that finds a balance between a .45 and a 9mm but because there is a slightly reduced capacity in "clips" that carry .40 the gangstas don't want it and since SIZE matters to all of those 1911 owners out there then THEY don't want it which leaves it to all of the middle-aged and younger crowd BUT since MOST of the people in the younger crowd and middle-aged group see themselves as elitests who do not see a need for guns, only a few of them buy the ammo (when they can afford to, but since most are college students or have no money or access to a credit card they can only stare at the ammo on the shelves) while the rest are protesting and calling themselves 99 percenters and wanting to know where their free obama phone is...

There. You have your answer.
