Bad time to start

I feel like I have picked the worst time to start reloading. I am able to find most of the bigger items ( press, dies, etc.) how cannot seem to find a few key items anywhere (primers & powder). In your opinion is it just going to get worse before it gets any better?

Have you seen the availability of common ammo and the price?

I live in Rancho Cucamonga and just started getting into reloading right before the latest round of political idiocy. Was able to get the press, dies, etc beforehand, but only a 1 lb of both pistol (HS-6) and rifle (Varget). Want to by some better powder than what I have (for the rifle anyway) and at least of 5K box of both small pistol and small rifle primers. Been looking all over the area and having trouble and refuse to pay an almost 30 fee to ship hazzardous cargo. I will definatley give them a call.

Also, if anyone is in the Rancho area that has been reloading awhile I would love to pick you brain!

I'm not the smartest man in the world but what are you looking for in rifle powder. Varget has always done me right. I wish I could actually find some right now.

Phillips Wholesale in Covina had 4000 wolf small primers sitting on the counter today. $30 ea. He was out of most powders and starting to run dry on primers.

I had gone in for some X-treme bulk 9mm his website said were in now. Ha, sold out first day in 4 hours. Have to wait two more weeks now and go in on a Thurs., stocking day. Never seen his shelves so bare.

I haven't gone shooting in a month an half. Getting the itch but don't want to shoot my stock for fear it's too much of a hassle to get goodies locally.

Were all a bunch of hoarders now, manufacturers are on full tilt.

Late to the party but my 2 cents. Get to the next gun show. I just came back from fresno's and CCI large rifle primers $42 per thousand. Though the shelves got pretty empty by the time I got to the register. Also, check out the whole area. Don't go and stand in line at the main ammo "dealers". I found Match 308 by winchester in 168 gr BTHP for $24 a box. A 200 rnd case was going for $230. The guy had stacks, but noone even noticed! But I got mine

It's a very good time to start reloading. Actually anytime you decide to reload you will be in better control of your ammo supply and not subject to these glitches in supply we've been experiencing every few years.
Things will get better, supply will catch up with demand and components prices will correct themselves. When they do buy in bulk and pat yourself on the back for deciding to reload.

I have seen this thread several times and I have ignored reading it because I agreed, but then last night I disagreed so here I am.

It is NEVER a bad time to start reloading. Are there better times? SURE, my best time would have been back in the days of when I was 6 and my dad took me out to lytle creek once or twice and instead of shooting I should have picked up all the brass that I could find. If I had saved all of my brass over the years I would have had a great reloading fund (of brass) to choose stuff from by now. I look back at all of that 9mm and 7.62 brass that I left behind in the Big Bear Mountains and I shudder thinking of all that I wasted. But here I am now and I am here to SHOOT.

It used to be so bad back in the day that my friend and I made a pact and SIGNED IT and it was simple:

Everytime you visit a gun store you buy a box of ammo that you can shoot. Once a month on a visit you could choose exemption and there were a few other rules but I had my copy laminated and hung on the wall by my door. What happened then was that we stopped shooting and started buying more and more ammo and now we both have plenty of ammo AND I reload, but he is just about to get started reloading too but my point is, we no longer scramble to purchase $100+ in ammo the night before the range trip because we have plenty of ammo in our stores. You do not have to buy cases at a time, you simply buy a box here and there. I must have over 5000 CB SHORT .22 rounds from winchester to shoot out of my suppressed bolt action remington 581s. Oh wait, THEY took all of my silencers that I had made and I no longer have a 581s because I sold it. But I DO have a Henry's lever action and it does not really need a silencer, plus, I have a suppressed .22 pellet gun that is dead on balls accurate at 37 yards out that I use for dispatching cats and coons and tree rats with bushy tails...

Sorry, TANGENT. Point is, start now, buy things on sale and keep on buying things here and there. You will find that reloading is similar to making baseball cards. You hunt around for components and when you DO find them you add them into your collection and then when you feel like it, you reload them. I was about to make 28 10mm loads yesterday because that was all of the 10mm shells that I had. Now because of last night and Eat Dirt, I have close to about 500+ 10mm shells. Yeah, I paid some money for a few, but I got a lot more for free.

THAT is what reloading is about. Pick and choose pick and choose. once you get all parts you are free to build and shoot. It does not have to happen NOW. Just slowly get on your way. I have not loaded up 40 yet but when I want to start I have probably close to 40k cases that I can clean and load and with the other 40+ lbs of brass that I pulled in last night, HEY now!

So stop feeling bad that you waited, feel good that you have started and just hunt out the deals now.

And to answer your question, it is getting better already. The people are fighting the panic buyers and shelves are getting restocked. We will be having primers flowing again in the next two-three weeks by my estimation.

In the mean time, shop estate sales and garage sales near you.

In a few weeks I plan to make a group buy among me and two-three friends. I am just waiting for the primers to come back in in powder valley. If you hate the hazmat fees (don;t we all?) either look for primed shells or get in on group buys. Grou buys allow you to pay only a fraction of the hazmat and shipping prices BUT you need to buy a lot of them to really make it count. I will typically buy about 5k or more primers for myself when I do that.

The only thing that sucks about getting friends into reloading (and MV3006 said this to me first) is that now we all scramble for brass...

BTW, I am glad to see a JR member actually contributing instead of "accidently" posting gouging ads here...

It's not nice to shoot cats! You need a hunting license to shoot raccoons and squirrels! Don't let the game warden, the county mounties or ME ever catch you doing any of that or you will pay dearly!

I got mah hunting license... The only cats that get shot are ferrel. All cats without collars are ferrel.
