    150gr Nosler E-Tip - .308 Win

So I have been working on some new all copper hunting loads for my Remington 700 in 308.

I shot a ladder of 150gr Nosler E-Tips with IMR 4064 today and to say the results were disappointing would be a pretty big understatement.

For the most part the groups were dismal 3+ MOA, with just a few rungs in the sub 2 MOA. My SD's were all really low, so it wasn't related to my velocities or components (other than the bullets).

Anyone who has tried these jewels and had better results, I would love to hear what you found that works.

I use H4350 on E-tips, and my groups are 2 inches wide. At 300 yards.

Different cartridge, but I've had good luck with H4350 for solid copper projectiles, both Barnes and Nosler.

I'm more curious about real world performance. I know the Barnes bullets are the Hammer of Thor on game. are the E-tips?

All I can say is try different powders. You'll find one that works with the rifle/load combo. It too me quite a few experiments before I found the "magic load" for my remington 700 in 8X57js

Thanks for all the information guys.

I think I am just going to pull the plug on the E-Tips. I have a load that works with the TTSX in the same weight, so I will just pay a little more for the Barnes.

How do you sight in at 300 yards? I mean, like how do you start? Does the answer involve a LOT of walking?

The E-tips dont group well from what i have tried with them. Barnes i can get them in the same hole bullet after bullet.

well some will walk to see the target, and some will use a spotting scope : ) i dont like walking lol

Funny, that's the exact same conclusion I came to when contemplating switching from barnes to E-tips in the 7x57.

to shoot at 300, I just sight in DEAD NUTS zero at 100, then calculate the drop chart. They aren't all that off within 300 yards no matter what numbers you use, so long as you are in the ballpark.

Shouldn't involve a lot of walking.

As WR posted above, just zero your scope at 100 yards and then use a ballistics calculator (many available online for free) to calulate the drop, pick a calm day and dial in the clicks needed for 300 yards (or whatever range you are shooting). You should be close unless you make made a mistake inputting into the calculator.

A few scope companies will make a custom knob for your elevation turret (for specific models, like Leupold CDS for instance). You give them your load and velocities and they will produce a knob indexed for your yardages so you just turn the knob, center the reticle and pull the trigger. A ten ring every time....

Interesting. I have never been to a range that big before. I see them but never thought of how to set a gun to shoot far. I have my ar with the dpms varmint upper set to 87 yards (cause that was all I could do at our range) and I can still smoke a clay pigeon at 154 yards but I aint gonna climb up on steale peeke to put them there, I will use others instead. Are there very many long ranges like that that have 300 + on them or are we talking military bases now?

I zero at 200 yards so then i just know i need to aim up or down a hair. as around here you would be lucky to get 500 yard shot.
