    Bit by the 10mm bug

So I bought my first Glock the other day, g29SF (I get to pick it up on doomsday). I have a 10mm/.40 1911, however I've never shot it, but I have shot 10mm in the past. Figured if I was going to buy a woods gun, I'd take something 'cheap' (I like my .44 way too much). Anyway I'm about to put in an order to Midway for a set of dies (Lee Carbide 4 die set) and bullets, and was hoping to get some advice from people who have loaded for the g29 (factory barrel, for now) on bullet weights for target/SD. I've read that higher grain bullets typically don't lose too much velocity out of the g29 (170gr+), and the reviews I read on the Hornady FMJ FN 180gr made them appealing for target loads, and Speer Gold Dot Bonded 180gr for HP, but I'm up for suggestions!

I also put in an order to Underwood for a box each of 155gr TMJ, 165gr BHP, 180gr BHP, and 180gr TMJ for testing, and once fired brass

As always, your input will be greatly appreciated!

My go to guns are a G20SF and G29SF. I load 180gr (XTP, PD and HAP) almost exclusively for them. The one exception might be for woods carry where you may want maximum penetration and a bullet like the Beartooth 200gr FNGC works pretty well.

My favorite powders for the 180's are Blue Dot, AA #9 and Longshot.

For my hottest loads I run new Starline Brass (bought from their website). I also use 40S&W brass for my plinking loads (you can load 10mm loads in 40S&W brass when you are using the heavier bullets like the 180's). They headspace on the extractor and work fine.

    Good luck, have fun.

I just got bit myself. I ordered a lone wolf barrel and it was defective I just sent it back today. The Glock barrel was just fine. I want to be able to shoot smaller groups so I will still try the LW product. They have a great rep.

I am a member at 10mm-firearms.com they have supplied me with all of the info i need for reloading. In fact my power pistol powder came in today! Good luck with the bug.

I've shot a friend's Glock 20 with an aftermarket barrel. Blue Dot does damn good and the odds of an overcharge are approximately zero%. You can virtually fill the case to the mouth, cram a 180grain in there and fire with little issue. Where this really comes in handy is if you worry about double-charging on accident, you'll know you threw 2 charges when your press is suddenly covered in 10 grains of powder.

Also, your choice of hornady is a good one, but I'd suggest you go with the XTPs instead of those FN. The cost on midway is the same for you, and it's a damn good hollowpoint. By using it for your target loads (at the same exact cost mind you) you're doing yourself a favor by training with what you intend to use.

I am shooting blue dot right now and I like it - also nice to be able to use it for both the 10mm and 9x25 Dillon. If I remember tonight I will pull some chrono data and post it.

180gr definitely seems like the goto bullet weight! As does Blue Dot for powder. I saw someone else mention .40S&W brass for 10mm, but isn't that ill advised? I've read you can put .40S&W through the 10mm barrel (or with a .40 barrel in it), but with enough powder in it for a 10mm powder load? Just seems dangerous.

That 10mm bug will get you at some point! Did you end up getting a g20 or 29?

I've read about the LW barrels having alot of feed issues lately, and having to be sent back to the factory to be repolished. They do have a good rep, and that's probably the barrel I will go with, just doesn't make much sense to me since they've obviously been having so many issues with them.

I checked out 10mm-firearms.com a few days ago, lots of good info! I just want to make sure I'm not doing anything stupid with a factory barrel/springs (even though I know I'll probably have to switch out both eventually)

Sounds like I'll be going with blue dot to start from everyone's recommendations. Sound advice on the XTP's! I had them in my cart, but I swapped them out for the FN without realizing they were virtually the same price. Put the order in today for 180gr XTP's and 180gr GD. I may pick up some Berrys 180gr, I'll have to do more research on them since I know they fragment at higher velocities. With my order from underwood coming in, I'll have enough TMJ's to play around with.

I load it to the same OAL as the 10mm equivalent. The gun doesn't know the difference (pressures are the same), the brass is just a little short, hence the 180gr and above bullets. It does foul up the last bit of the chamber, so you need to use a chamber brush on it before returning the barrel to regular 10mm load service, but otherwise, no difference.

I also don't load anything over powder manufacturer guidelines in 40 brass.

Was loading 10mm for a Delta Elite. Best load was with mixed brass, Zero brand 180gr JHP, Win Large Pistol Primer and Accurate Arms #9 seated to 1.250" My load was 2 grains less than max and it chrono'd at 1184 feet per second 10 feet from the muzzle. Saw no need to go any hotter, since this load pounded the steel plates and was very accurate.

If you get berrys, you should load them to .40s&w speeds and use them for your plinking loads. I'm still working my way through a box of them for my .40 right now. They do great at those speeds.

                        Hey...!

I really love the fact that I can reload 10MM and that we have so many options.

I do not reload .40 (have in the past, but not now) and I do shoot Winchester White Box .40 (from wally world) thru my Glock 20SF without issue. In fact, I've run several magazines loaded with hot 10MM and .40, Hot 10MM and .40 alternating in the magazine. It runs fine. Weird shooting something that CRACKS and zips out at 1500 FPS and the next round kinda poofs-out hardly making any sound...hahaha...but it runs. I do have a .40 barrel but don't run it since trying out .40 in my normal or one of my aftermarket barrels.

Like Bill above, I use Longshot, AA#9 and Blue-dot as my three favorite powders. I run berrys at 155 grain for plinking and I did buy 500 Winchester 175 grain silvertip boolets from Midway last year so I could reload some SD carry ammo. I used Longshot for that and it is perfect for me.

Lately I found some 135 Grain Nosler hollowpoints and wow, those are sure fun to turbo-charge (I used some old AA#5 I had from 1990). Those pop out at 1600 FPS and are incredibably fun to shoot. Real ZIPPY ammo.

I have barrels from Lonewolf, Stormlake (my Glock 29) and KKM. All run well.

I also have a Glock 20SF Long Slide that is a hoot to shoot.

Dang..being addicted to 10MM is so much fun.........

PS. I see that Starline has 10MM cases back in stock....hmmm..maybe another 1000 for the fun-of-it. ($147, not bad)
May the Bridges I burn light the way.

Fewer people are killed with all rifles each year (323 in 2011) than with shotguns (356), hammers and clubs (496), and hands and feet (728).

Ok....now I'am going to have to research Power Pistol. (and buy some..arrg)

You can't have too many primers or powder.

I've had the 10mm bug for a while. I'm planning on picking up a Glock 20 after Christmas. I like having the option of loading it hot for defense and then light for plinking.

If you are going to use Berrys plated bullets for loading 10mm, make sure you use a medium to slow burning powder, eg Unique to AA#9. I tried loading 180gr plated bullets in 10mm as plinking ammo using faster burning powders, but this caused the bullets to tumble. Switched to slower powders and they shot just fine
