Start up costs...If you factor in powder, the rifle uses about 5 times the powder that a pistol does, i.e. it will cost $500 to load rifle and $100 for pistol (just in powder cost).

How often do you get to shoot rifle, versus pistol? Load for what you use more of. I know 223 can go like water, but I can burn up a lot of pistol ammo in a short time.

If you shoot any "games" (USPSA/IDPA) then go for pistol.

Right now I shoot more pistol than rifle. But when I do get to shoot rifle I like to shoot alot. Also I would like to have stockpiled about ~2000 rounds for 223, maybe more.

As far as the "games" right now I dont shoot in any. To far away from me.

I wouldn't. I would choose the one that I shoot more.

Overall, I'd pick one and start saving for the other. When November comes, no telling about the ammunition situation

ahahah so true, one of the reasons I want to start stock piling components.

                    NO.

                        a 18 months ago I would have said 45ACP

                        BUT...

the price of 223 has doubled recently and has become harder to come by. So I would say 223. And as for the 1500 to pay it off. If you have 1000 rounds stockpiled you are already 2/3 the way there 500 more to last a few trips to the range and you are paid off.

just to give food for thought if you were to cast lead bullets for 45 than price per round would be more like $.05 a round
I will share my opinion and my load data, BUT I am just a guy with too many cigars and too many guns. Whatever I say is probably wrong.

I don't want to get into casting right now and plus I'm not really fond of lead boolits
