Start by showing up at the monthly matches.
If you are good enough to be one of the best 10 shooters, you might get invited.

Note that the monthly matches are on the same range as the invitational match will be so you get home field advantage.

Hmmm....I just re-read the "Tactical Rifle" section at the Chabot site. It says you can use any centerfire rifle and there will be two classes:

- Semi-Auto Class: any detachable, magazine-fed or clip-fed, semi-automatic rifle.
- Open Class: Any other action type (lever, bolt, slide, semi-auto with internal magazine) rifle

Assuming that is true/current, maybe you can save a "little" bit of money and just go with a .223 rifle.

You may need to hit to 1000yds at times so you better be good with that 223.

If you only plan on shooting tac matches at chabot, a 223 would be fine. If you plan on more in depth tac/precision rifle matches, the 223 wouldn't be a good choice. Shots from 800-1000 yards are pretty normal.

real good Match rounds ex: Black Hill will run you well over $25 a box.
I finally made the jump & started to reload my own .308 too. I went with the Lapua 155gr ran me about $35 for a box of 100 plus another $40 for brass, thats not including powder & primer.

you still spend money but the big difference is the performance of the bullet.

I was picking up 308 brass (about 200 rounds) that others at the range today where leaving. While I won't use it for my match loads, my 1919 is going to love it!

Federal gold match is $35.00 for 20.....glad I stockpiled back when it was $20.00 for 20.

Got a case of FGM at the last Cowpalace show and it worked out to $25 per box.

I started reloading in 2000...

My ammo component order to GIBRASS.com sometimes was better than $800. I use to get 1984 pull-down LC brass for 49.00 per 1K from Wiedners. com. Even now I have about 3000 unloaded new brass from back then. I also have 32LBs of 4895. I see the prices going up the way they are and I'm glad I spent the money. I have also managed to stash 6000 173gr bullets for my .308 and 30.06. If there is ever a fire here they'll have to put me in a rubber room

Dang! Its time for you to start buying in bulk. When you buy 1k at a time, the 155's will run about $23/hundred. Find a powder that works well and buy a lot of it at one time. You'll save so much more.

Last time I bought Black Hills 175gr match, IIRC it was $1/cartridge.
