How short is too short for 44 mag?

Using imr-4227 I found that my load of about 23gr that had been pressed down too much to give me an OAL of 1.539 and one more a tad longer and they are refusing to be pulled from theshell via kinetic bullet puller.

I ran the numbers through quickload and saw that they only generate a pressure of about 30000 psi.

SO then does that mean that they are safe to shoot?

I will take closer readings and redo my test again and see if it is different but it is interesting and maybe I should just shoot them both off if they are safe and I am making a big deal outta nothing...

    Opinions?

A quick look at my manual next to the desk does not have any 44 mag loads that short ,they all start with the shortest at 1.600 . I suggest you put more of a snap in that Kinetic puller swing .
I would not chance my firearm/health to quick load and please if you decide to shoot them make sure i am not standing next to you .

Yeah, I am seeing green lights to shoot from a program but I have never heard of anything that short. I guess I will hit that puller harder and see where it gets me. I once made a plated into an hourglass with that thing...

Are you whacking the kinetic bullet puller against concrete, brick, stone, or something of similar hardness? When whacking it against wood (yeah, I know), I've found the bullet can be a little stubborn, but it's never taken more than two strikes against my concrete patio to get 'em out.

According to BoLee P648 I think section: 240GR LEAD they list 1.585 as shortest for imr-4227. HOWEVER I just realized that they list 1.535 for W296 so who knows. Maybe it is safe after all. I usually keep my 240 rounds at 1.600 since they fit.

I was using particle board (8x4 sheet) I have not though of using the concrete because I did not want to break the puller. I figured that hitting it against concrete might shatter it. Then I would have powder all over. I will have to give that a try next.

I actually have some sheets of solid surface plastic leftover from a bathroom stall that is still covered in plastic and never used (previous homeowner was a owner of apartments and other items) I cut that into a square and have been using it but it is slicker then wood.

You probably have not put a crimp on like that one either Cowboy..

Quickload's estimate of the projected pressure of 30K PSI jives with Hodgdon's load data, but that load data is for an OAL at 1.6".

I think why nobody is stepping up to say they will be safe for sure is nobody knows for sure. That is what minimum OAL's are about, when you deviate from load specs, you are developing your own load spec.

If you keep whacking the bullet will come out. If the puller breaks from too much whacking, RCBS will replace it for free. If it isn't an RCBS whacker and it breaks, replace it with an RCBS whacker, so that when it breaks again, they will replace it for free.
