Not necessarily. You should only crimp enough to remove the bell. There is no reason to crimp any more than 0.470" on 45 acp.

Remember, brass expands as smokeless powder is ignited. Sealing is not an issue AFAIK.

The fate of the wounded rest in the hands of the ones who apply the first dressing.

Is that 5.0 of 231 using a 185gr bullet? I don't doubt I could go lower if I used a lighter spring. The 18# spring made factory ammo more pleasant to shoot as well, another reason I settled on the 18# spring.

I am going to work up some loads for 200gr Xtreme plated rn next, so I am open to hear what has worked for y'all.

        Perhaps it's bad powder?ImageUploadedByTapatalk1343033053.377548.jpg

Powder is good to go. I've made and shot 9mm, 38spl, and 10mm with this same pound of 231.

The reason why the 185 requires more powder to work a slide then say a 200 is because of the lack of weight in front of the back pressure . Newton's laws at work, more mass creates more force . So you have to compensate with more powder.

For my 1911 i load those 185's with 5.8 gr of W231. The lighter spring was a good choice.

Thanks Aaron....that's something I learned thanks to you guys here. I went off of data from my manuals like I should and then went up from there due to the advice I received here. Now I'll have a better idea with where I should start loads for the 200gr bullets I have.

Both 185 and 200. Gun completely stock, little more then 5k through it.

I run 4.7gr of W231 under a Berry's 200gr SWC with the OAL set at 1.225". They cycle 100% (1250 so far) in my 5" 1911 with a 16lb recoil spring. I guess every gun is different.
