    Hornady LNL AP Powder Problem

I am having a difficulty time with my case activate powder drop. I am trying to load about 66 grain for a 270wsm and every time I try adjusting the standard meter above 50 grain, I get an excess of powder spilling everywhere. I've check the case, and it's no where near full.

I have the case activate powder drop set up with the rifle rotor and standard meter. Everything is spray with Hornady dry lube with little to no sticking. Any help is appreciate.

It may be the powder bushing. Be sure that it is the correct one for your application. Also, be sure that you have it installed with the deep countersink side up. Hope this helps.

Dumb question but are you using the rifle insert and not the pistol insert?

There's three different bushing inserts...straight from the manual...

Maybe hold the case at the top stroke (handle down) longer to allow the heavier charge to flow through the small case and drop opening

I had a similar issue with mine when I first set it up. The fix was to clean everything with brake cleaner, then I used a Q-tip and swabbed the internal parts with graphite powder. Problem solved. Though I would triple check that you are using the right rotor, meter, and bushing before anything.

What powder are you using, is it a stick powder? Maybe you're getting powder bridging? I can throw 49gr of Varget fine for my 30-06 loads.

Where are you located, maybe you're close to another calgunner in your area who has a LNL.

You will be amazed how long it takes to drop a large charge of powder. Sixty six grains of powder is a lot to drop through a small hole. You need to stop or hesitate for about 1 second or more at the bottom of your stroke to give the powder time to fall into the case. Give it a try.

Thanks for all the input...I decided to manually measure 66 grains and loaded into the case...done 6 so far and am happy

Probably another day or so, I'll go back to the powder measure and wait for a few sec to give the powder time to fall into the case...

Very important! My dropper wasn't dropping consistent charges. It was constantly off by about 1-2 grains up and down. I scratched my head for a while because I followed the DVD exactly. What I realized is that you should not lube the dropped at all. The DVD says to use the Hornady One Shot to clean it out and lube it up. I found that the lube caused the dropped to drop very inconsistently. I took everything apart and used carb cleaner on it and reassembled it dry. It drops the EXACT charge about 90% of the time and the other 10% were 0.1gr over. Good enough for me!

I don't own one, but I always thought Hornaday's recommendation was to use the One Shot degreaser, not the One Shot case lube.

Yes, they say to use the one shot cleaner, it does have a dry lube in it tho.
If you used the one shot case lube, I could see problems.
