What would cause shells to fly in different directions?

Shot the 44mag with 16.2gr of AA#7 and the shells flew back about 5 feet to my right. Shot 23.3gr of H110 and they were JUST about 2-3 feet off to my right and a few even right in front of me, like they just popped up and then down. Did not hit me and they were not obstructed.

I thought that this was all mechanical so how is that possible that the gun throws them in different locations?

My friend said that maybe the different powders had different forces on the extractor working so that on the weaker powder it was able to fully grab the shell where it maybe had little to no time to get a good grip and grab the shells out on the stronger powder.

    Opinions?

    What type of firearm?

To answer your question, try throwing a ball at a wall with different amounts of force and see if the simple mechanics make the ball land in the same place all the time.

      to simplify

different loads will send the slide back at different speeds

the speed and force of the slide will "pull" on the brass diferently
I will share my opinion and my load data, BUT I am just a guy with too many cigars and too many guns. Whatever I say is probably wrong.

44 mag Deagle. I figured that a HARD pull would chuck the brass across the field. and I do not feel the blast and hear the music using AA#7 like when I do using H110. But I also expected the brass to fly behind me as well, but just closer to me, not straight out to the side at a completely different angle.

Ah, now I get it. Deagle - Desert Eagle. I agree with the others, the powder burn rate and amount used will affect the placement of the used brass. My 2nd wife (don't ask how many I have had) used to shoot a 9mm Taurus. Most of the time it threw the empties to the right, which annoyed me because guess where I stood? However, occasionally it would throw them straight back. Once it even went right down between the...well, she jumped around a while. And that was with all the same load. So that's one of a few reasons I shoot revolvers.

Even though your bullet is going faster with the H110 your max chamber pressure is 900 psi less. That load of AA #7 is burning ~90% and the load of H110 about 72% of the powder. Here's the difference (using your load data w/240 gr. Rainier bullets 1.610" OAL 6" barrel): Muzzle pressure AA #7 = 6981psi, H110 = 7862psi....Chamber pressure AA #7 = 23888psi, H110 = 22963psi. CONFUSING AIN'T IT!..... MV H110 = 1228fps, AA #7 = 1214fps. Generated using QuickLOADS software. SAAMI Pmax chamber pressure for 44 Rem.mag. = 36000psi. Trying to get close to that pressure and you,re playing with dynamite IMHO

You can tune this in some semi-auto pistols by changing the recoil spring to a lighter or stronger spring. If you're shooting really hot loads, you should have a stiffer spring to reduce hammer the slide, likewise if you want to shoot soft loads you should have a softer spring to ensure smooth cycling.

If a lighter spring isn't available, you can modify a stock spring by cutting off coils, but be conservative, maybe 1/2 coil at a time until you get to where you want to be. You can't put the coils back on.

If a stronger spring isn't available, you'll have to download to keep the ejection and slide hammering to where you want it.
