I dont see how that guy had any claim to that brass simply because he reloads. Just thinking of the kind of person that would walk up to a perfect stranger and say something like that bugs me a little bit. Arrogance like that really sets me off, he deserved at the very least a snarky remark or being told to go pound sand.

I was at Angeles on Sunday, there were 5 of us so when it wasnt my turn to shoot i was scrounging. Im not gonna lie, i picked up MUCH more than what i shot, and if anyone wanted some of it nothing was stopping them from getting in on the action.

Once the original owner says he/she doesn't want the brass, as soon as it hits the ground it is open season. If the dude was cool and not a d-bag, he'd have said "Hey, I reload too, is it cool with you if I pick up some of this stuff, too?" If I see I'm late to the scrounging party, I usually won't even bug the guy who beat me to it.

Yeah, I don't know what the guys deal was. Never happened before. I Usually pick up way more than I shoot also.
I was there with my kid and didn't want any problems so I turned the other cheek.
I usually go durring the week and this weekend it was slammed with a bunch of non members at the pistol range.
Anyway, thanks for all the replies, Like I said before I'm new to reloading and don't want to be "that guy" that pisses every one off.... If I see that dude again when I'm scrounging I'll just tell him if he wants some to start picking it up.

Not trying to thread-jack, but does anybody here know what the brass-gathering policy is at 5-dogs range outside Bakersfield?

He picks up what is in his area and you in yours. Whatever was swept up is fair game.

I stroke all my brass with a marker on the headstamp. If it's mine I pick it up. If it's not I give it to the guy I think owns it. If he want's it he'll usually thank me, if he doesn't then it's already up and in my hand.

If that guy "expects" you to give him some brass simply because he reloads, the he's out of his mind. If he reloads too, then he should be picking them up himself and not wait for you to push them in a pile and picked them out.

                    Ask first.

I hate when 'helpful' people start sweeping up my brass to toss it, when it's obvious that they're handloads...hell, they're in a peanut butter jar with load data attached to the top!

There are some dudes @ Burro that are up your booty, dang near catching it in mid air as it is ejected.

Just don't walk up to a shooter... while they're actively firing... and ask if they're keeping their brass. You'd think that would be common sense, especially from an off-duty RO, at the range where he's an RO. Apparently it's too much to expect.

Always ask first--never just start picking up. I reload and if someone has brass I might want I go over and ask. Easy and polite! Once someone leaves then it is fair game.
If you want change you have to put in your 2 cents, you can't just sit on the sidelines and whine.

                            Ask
                            Do you want your brass?
I have people say no I don't reload and hand me their .270 etc after every round
                            Score
Free range brass is yours for the picking ,just be aware of shooters who may want theirs. I know I want mine.

sounding like a broken record in here but I too always ask the shooter when they are reloading if they want their brass. 95% of the time they say "no, its all yours". If they are obviously reloaders and have plastic ammo boxes or a peanut butter jar with load data on it I don't bother them and give them a lot of space by not touching anything near them. I can't stand people who start picking up my brass at my feet WHILE i'm shooting. I usually stop and tell them to leave my brass alone. Its hard sometimes when a nice person thinks he is helping by sweeping up everyone's brass. I thank them for their help but kindly explain that I reload and that its best to wait until the shooter leave before you clean up after them.

As for a pile of swept up brass, its all fair game and you snooze, you lose. I only take slightly more than I drop too keep my supply line running but I'm sure to leave some for the other reloaders doing the same.

I shoot at ASC in G.H.W Bush Park in Houston when I'm down there... Had an RO come over to me while shooting my Judge and asked if I reload. In front of me were a fair stack of blue plastic ammo boxes.. I replied that I did, and he went behind his stand and came back with about 250 .45LC cases. He told me he used to reload but no longer had the time, and that he had scrounged the cases there at the range. He said he still would shoot occasionally, so I offered him some of my reloads in exchange for the cases, but he declined my offer.
I hope he didn't think I was being greedy when I mentioned that I also reload .44mag! This was very generous for this guy to provide me part of his stash!

I have just purchased a new Colt Defender in .45acp, and now have to begin collecting for it too! Judging by the amount of .45acp brass lying around, it seems not too many shooters in HOU are reloading it!
