Brass scrounging etiquette

So today I was at the range and picked up alot of 223 and 45 brass from the 50 and 7 yard ranges. The pistol brass usually gets swept up into piles around the poles. I have been picking up any 45 I see in those piles. The range masters don't seem to mind. I asked one range master when I first started reloading and he said that if it's swept into the piles its ok to scrounge. Anyway another shooter asked me if that was my brass I was picking up? I said no. He said something like "well I reload too." I felt a little weird about the whole thing..... Please tell me if I'm in the wrong here..

Unless the range has a policy saying once it hits the ground it is theirs, it is fair game.

You do not touch another shooters brass while he/she is still there unless you ask first. period.

The other guy was just too slow IMHO.

I was talking to the range master while I was scrounging. They are cool with scrounging. It was another shooter that I had the interaction with.

I always ask if the shooter is keeping his brass before I pick it up while they are there.... It was just weird that the guy was upset that I was picking up the already swept up brass...

I thought I was doing something wrong.

How does this work on concrete?

I have one of those and it is awesome on concrete. Not so hot in loose dirt w. rocks tho.

Thanks. I thought it would've been the opposite. I shoot at USI in concord which has concrete. I'll just might have to pick one of these up. Thanks again.

I would of told the other shooter... "then get on your knees and start picking up brass".

It's not like you were standing to his right catching his brass... gee.

I always ask around me before picking anything up, even wad cutters will leave a mark.

when someone says "well I reload too" I say, "good, then pick up some brass if you want it otherwise I'm taking it" it's on the ground, it's not labelled and it's in a pile. Seems like fair game to take it all if you want and if dude misses out, his fault for not getting there earlier.

This. I have had people say the same thing to me, "I reload to". I never understand that, if you reload then get to work collecting. I am not going to give you half of what I collected no matter how nice you ask....

But I always ask before I start picking up someone elses. I have never had a non reloader say no. Most are happy to have someone cleaning up after them....
