surplus/cheap 308 accuracy

I would like to poll people's experience on using surplus. Please specific the rifle you are using

I have shot three kinds recently from my FN SPR bolt gun (20" chrome-lined barrel)

(1) LC 04/05 stamped - consistently 1.0-1.5 inch at 100 yards
(2) Chinese copper washed 1993 production: about the same as LC but may be slightly better. Occasional flyers
(3) South African (140 rd battle pack) - 1.5-2.0 inch groups @ 100 yards. Result not consistent. Some better and some worse groups

I had 460 rounds of this and it did about the same at times. Very inconsistent and the group would open up to 12" sometimes. No FTF, or hangups. This was in my SOCOM16 thru my Leupold 6.5x20x40.

I had much better luck with wolf grouping .75-1.5inch

I've had good luck with South African.

I've had less luck with Aussie which everyone seems to love.

All I know is that South African shoots clean and consistent for me.

But your topic got me thinking? Surplus * Accuracy * Bolt gun....

Aren't these rounds designed for war and to be fired from semi-autos and machines guns to hit a man size target? I can't imagine these being that accurate. jmho

Yesterday I took my new chrono and a bunch of different loads to the desert. Got some interesting results.

i have surplus .308 Nato rounds, German i think. They were inconsistant on the FPS, but I was shooting at a bowling pin, hanging from a rock, and managed to hit it 8 out of ten times with my full length M1a, Springfield gen 1 scope.

I also found out that some .556 Nato surplus was a little inconsistant (fps), but not as much as what I loaded with my 550. I think the charge bar on the 550 caused the problem, loads were off by as much as 200 fps.

I couldn't check accuracy as the wind was blowing pretty hard, but we had a good day out there.

Jim, you are correct but I am cheap so I am using surplus to practice trigger-pulling

I got good groups out of Magtech ammo and its the same price as surplus.
