Drop would be severe at that distance. Subs would save the pelt?

.223 seems to zip right through tennis balls. Maybe not the same thing.

I am waiting on some 247gr bullets so I can play around with subs for my 300blk. Going to start with 9grs of A1680. Should cycle a semi auto.

                  Toss a grenade at um...

Have you thought of using Barnes Varmint Grenades? You can load them fast and they won't exit so your pelts are in great shape.

That's what I would suggest. VG. You might be able to find frangible or other similar style projectiles, too.

There's data for using a few grains of Red Dot and other fast burning pistol powders.

Trajectory is pretty easy to determine with a chart.

How about the .17 Remington, I hear that is or was popular with pelt hunters.

Heavy slippery bullets do best in the kinds of loads you're talking about. The .223 has way more powder capacity than needed for what you can get for bullet weight.

I'd opt for 300 Whisper/AAC or even 6.8 SPC or 7.62x39 (either with a .308 bore or with cast bullets). The CZ mini mausers are about perfect for these cartridges.
