            Want some advice.

Use a load and powder that fills the case to 60+ percent. If you were to double charge it spills over and is very noticeable. Its a prudent way to load and creates a secondary buffer for safety.

Here is the reason I went to this protocol. I, like you, was using a small charge weight in the 4gr area and got a double charge without seeing it.

4.7 here too, but I use plated bullets, so for FMJs, you can use more, just double check with your manuals/loading data.

I used to use 5.3gr but have dropped back to 5.1gr. Shoots about the same but saves a bit of powder over time. I'm VERY happy with this load under a 230gr FMJ from Zero Bullets.

My standard load is: R-P cases, Win. LP primers, Hornady 230 gr. HP-XTP, 5.0 grains of 231.

Funny you posted this, this is exactly the setup I'm experimenting/learning with. I have a bit of various range pickup brass (RP, Fed, Win, Fiocci, and some SP Blazer that confused me for a second). I'm using CCI LPP.

My reloading manual says between 4.2gr minimum and 5.3gr maximum of W231 for 230gr jacketed.
                      1.200 OAL.

So far I'm throwing just shy of 4.2 and my rounds are about 1.208-1.210 OAL and look way too recessed in the case. But I've only put together a few mock rounds and a couple loaded rounds. Back to the drawing board.

I will be following this thread...and buying a bullet puller tomorrow haha.

Holy crap.... Are you reloading on a progressive?

One of the reasons (apart from the fact that I'm cheap) that I still use a single state to reload handgun ammo is so that I can visually inspect every single round that I make for cracks, deformations, inconsistent powder levels, etc.

It has been a while for W231, but my load chart says my favorite load for .45 ACP using 230gr RN was 4.7gr W231, seated to 1.2" OAL using WSP.

5gns of W231 under a 230gn tip will deliver what the .45 acp was designed for... muzzle lengths of 4-5" will chrono at appx. 800-850fps.
                              Thump!

I agree with the 60%+ case fill idea. I recently shrapped myself and believe it was a double or near double charge.

I have always weighed each round and recently decided that sorting my brass was a waste of time. NAUGHT! Case weights can very significantly THAT is enough to make a Kaboom. Now I have to tear down the Springer and replace a bunch of small parts. Hmmm! Time for some more upgrades? Followed by brass discrimination.
