I use my hands and eyes. I like to be able to look at the headstamp on every case to ensure that the case I'm picking up is a 9mm, and not a .380. It also gives me a quick second to feel and visually inspect the brass for any immediately noticeable defects.Comment

I sort by hand and use the plastic trays that come in ammo boxes to tell the difference between all of the small cartridges. The Federal or Blazer trays are the best.
First, I pick out all of the 45. Then I try to get most of the 40. I drop what is left into those plastic trays. When they are sitting in the trays it is easy to pick out any remaining 40s. Plus you can spot the 380 because they are shorter than 9mm. After I have all the 9mm in trays, I use another tray to flip them over to pick out the WCC (crimped) headstamps. I put all the 45 brass in the trays to sort out the small primers.
Any bad brass gets picked out along the way. I sort brass after every range trip, so it doesn't take too much time. If you use the sorting bowls, you're still going to have to go through it for culls and the small primer 45s at the very least.Ronald Reagan once said that the most terrifying words in the English language are: "I'm from the government and I'm here to help".

Just ordered the Dillon pans. I had an order going anyways, so it was combined shipping. For me, it really comes down to time savings.Comment

I hate .380! I sort by hand and .380s always sneak by. Then I'm on my 550b and suddenly clunk! I've partially seated a .380 with a primer. Ugh!==================

Go to RiteAid or Walgreens and get a pair of magnifying reading glasses. They're just a couple bucks and greatly speed up the process of identifying the headstamp on small cases.sigpic
