There are frangible rounds or snake load, but not recommended since you will likely end up on the street after the guy sues you for badly injuring him. Maybe switch to a shotgun with like no. 4 buckshot. Keep the .40 as a sidearm.

    Practice, practice, practice.

You are not supposed to transport loaded magazines in California. You can get in heap-big-trouble even if they are in a locked box.

EDIT: comment retracted - see below

Since you are new to firearms, here's an easy way to select an appropriate home defense round; use what the majority of armed professionals (LE) use. This will be Federal HST, Speer Gold Dot or Winchester Ranger T.

Also, someone above mentioned Ammo2Go. The advantage to shopping on line for your defense ammo is that you can find it in the 50 round LE packaging for about the same price you will pay for a 20 round box at your local gun store.

Make sure you purchase enough defense ammo to run a decent number of rounds through your FNP to make sure ammo and gun agree with one another, though I suspect your FNP will handle just about anything you feed it.

Wanna know whats fun? Have to wait till it gets real cold outside so if you live in the high desert or mountains, it will work way better/sooner than the rest of us.
Boil up some water, make extra thick red jello, pour in pumpkin, place outside the night before shooting trip. AWESOME FUN!!!!

Are you sure about this? I read the opposite. Loaded magazines are fine in the same box just not in the magwell.

Uh... no. You can transport loaded mags all day long and you can keep them in the same locked container as the firearm. The mag cannot be in the gun itself though.
A mugger, even an armed one, can only make a successful living in a society where the state has granted him a force monopoly.

You guys are right. Sorry for the FUD.
Whenever I read the law before, my brain edited out the last part about the mag being attached to the gun.

Here's the actual law (note that it says "attached to the firearm"):
                      12031.
                      (g) A firearm shall be deemed to be loaded for the purposes of
this section when there is an unexpended cartridge or shell in, or
attached in any manner to, the firearm, including, but not
limited to, in the firing chamber, magazine, or clip thereof
                      attached to the firearm.
It seems to me that a police officer could bust you now and let you sort it out in the courts later. Sure, you would be exonerated but only after paying for your defense.
I just carry mine empty to avoid any extra attention. It would be bad enough to be pulled over carrying the arsenal I usually bring to the range without the added detail of loaded mags.

There are uncommon exceptions in California law that state that a loaded magazine in the same area as an unloaded firearm constitutes a loaded firearm. Those exceptions are outlined below. Those alternate definitions also help prove the rule that the definition of loaded firearm requires rounds in the chamber or rounds in a magazine in a firing position directly attached to the action.
That does not mean you cannot be arrested by uninformed or badly trained law enforcement officer, or charged with the crime of carrying a loaded weapon by an uninformed or politically motivated prosecutor. It does mean that, if it goes to court and you have good representation, the prosecution should lose on the law. There are certain exceptions to this outlined below. Your comfort level may lead you to do more than the law requires. Please also see Transport Restriction for Handguns for some important additional notes on transporting handguns in California.

                      Sorry for the threadjack.

I like the Speer Gold Dot. Tend to use it in all calibers for HD ammo.
