    Primer disposal

Whats the safest way to dispose of unfired primers? I tried burning a few and that definitely was not the answer. I've got a mix of about 75 that need to go. Thanks-Tom.

Soaking in oil does not always work. So, don't just do that and throw them in the trash. You've only got abot 75? Why don't you find a fireman who reloads (so he doesn't freak out) and ask him if he can dispose of them properly? If you can get them to me, I can pass them on to a SWAT supervisor to give to the bomb squad.

Put in ear plugs and eye protection and smack them with a hammer.

I did that once, on the pavement in front of my garage and it was LOUD! Scared me to heck and had to quickly close up before any neighbors called the local LE.

Reloaders will take them and dispose of them properly.

Or, you can put them in WD40 for a couple of days and they will become inert.

I'd chuck 'em in the trash, but that's just me.

WD 40 killing primers is a very bad myth. The only safe way to deactivate a primer is to seat it in a case and fire it.

                Tom,

What's your location? And what brand are the primers?
Are they small pistol or large pistol?
                Or rifle Primers?

Maybe it 's best to givem away to reloaders.

Just throw them in the trash. That's all. I did it before with some mystery primers and I never heard of a garbage technician being harmed on the news.

I am a reloader. The primers are a mix of every type and brand all mixed up in a jar. Some were strays from my reloading and the rest were removed from a batch of primed cases that were given to me. The cases were on the verge of head separation, so i deprimed them and tossed the cases in the scrap brass bucket. Primers are cheap enough that I don't want to reuse, guessing if it's a magnum, regular, rifle or pistol. Also I'm not comfortable with reusing a primer thats been decapped.

BTW, if you try burning them they pop like a firecracker. It also sends pieces of the hot little buggers flying everywhere. -Tom.

Just load the primers up in some cases, fire 'em off at the range, and have some noise-makin' fun!

Interesting article. I'm going to try out a few of the methods as a home science project. Soak a few in each test medium for a day or two, then a five day "dry out". Then see wich still fire.

Motor Oil, Vegetable oil, Hopes #9, WD40, and Water. I don't have any Kroil or that would be on the list too. If anyone has anything else to try let me know. Thanks-Tom.
