I have a box of 155 AMAXs and 155 SMKs at home that I've been meaning to experiment with. Do they really kick 175s butt with the wind?

Not those. I use the 155 amaxes for hunting and they do well. But with a BC of only .435, I had a hard time keeping them supersonic at 1000 at Sac Valley. The 155 SMK's are a little better at .450, but still, its a crap shoot between those and the 175's. The 155 Scenar has a BC of .508, besting the 175 SMK by a smidge. Combine that BC with 2850-2900, or even faster with Win brass and a long barrel, you get much less drop and wind at any distance...not to mention one holers at 100. They're a great way to make your 308 think its a 300 winny.

Maybe it was just luck but I did not notice a big dif in my ammo from baking in the sun during the class. I am running 175s with 41.5g of IMR 4895 in lc brass with cci br primers. POI was barely different and removing adjustments for the position of the sun it was the same. Maybe the smoke colored cases I use helped.

When I was using a different powder, I really noticed a difference at a match when we were sitting in the sun for 30 minutes, waiting for twolf to tell us when to shoot at a 1 inch dot. The longer the round stayed in the hot chamber, the more vertical stringing I got. I lost enough points there to convice me I wanted a more stable powder.

I'll try a box of Scenars and see, maybe if we go to Pete's again. As to powder I'm not a Varget guy as it varies too much between lots (long story but lets just say I got tired of reveloping a load every time I ordered powder). IMR tends to be very sensitive in fact I have seen Highpower shooters keep their 4064 loads in a cooler during matches on hot summer days. I personally use RE15 with no problems with temp - hell its good enough for M118LR.

U should have said something last wkend. I've a brand new 1lb RL15 in the truck that I can part with.

Now knowing that RL15 is a good powder, I really need an electronic dispenser and digital scale..... since it is very difficult to achieve an accurate powder drop... :-(

So, is RL15 a good powder to stick with? I am tired of trying out different powders...... (both for .223 and .308)

In all aspects (wt., BC, shape, design, etc...) , except that Nosler's tends to have polishing materials stuck inside its hollow-point, Nosler's CC is the same as SMK. (I checked for .223 77gr HPBT and .308 168gr HPBT)

The .308 Nosler J4's (custom competition) work as well as the SMKs--at least for highpower (iron sights) purposes. I've been shooting their factory 2nds for the past year and a half now. The 155AMax is a pretty good bullet too. Pretty much any match bullet at nominal velocities will shoot inside the 168gr when it comes to wind deflection.

Check OK Weber for SMK's. He's got pretty good prices usually, and he's up in Oregon, so they'll show up on your doorstep the next day.
