    Shotshell Reloading.

Who here reloads shotshells? I have been collecting all of the hulls that I've fired so that I could sell them in the future, but I don't think I've seen a single thread on shotgun reloading, and a single WTS ad for 12ga hulls in the marketplace.

How much do the husks typically go for... say... for a pack of 500 once fired hulls?

You could generally get $0.10 a hull for once-fired AA or STS 28ga/410s. The 20/12 aren't worth as much, because you can get cheap factory target loads.

What is the price difference, on average, of high brass vs low brass hulls? Significant at all?

Most of the hulls are steel based, some have paper in the bottom part of the hulls. The AA & STS are brass based and the construction are made specially for reloading. I can't tell you for sure how the hulls are constructed, but those are the difference I know. The high base hulls are mostly for higher pressure shells. They are not desirable for reloading.

I saved a bunch of high brass buckshot Federal hulls.

Check out the Alliant Powder Catalog. It lists all of the reloadable hulls and give data for them. The cheapy wal mart hulls are not desirable for reloading since the base wads *could* come loose and kB the barrel on the subsequent shot.

Actually, high brass/low brass doesn't matter.. internal capacity is what matters.. and the pressure on a high brass hull is no higher than the pressure on a low brass hull.. They all work in the range of 9000-11,500 units. Lighter loads can go as low as about 6000 units but will not work in auto-loading shotguns.

I suggest you get the Lyman shotshell reloading guide and read it cover to cover at least twice. It will explain everything to you and how things work. I have loaded just about everything under the sun.. usually the Wally world 100 packs that sell for cheap can be reloaded once or twice, but they can frustrate the heck out of you. The target load hulls like the STS's area dream to load in comparison. All hulls have their idiosyncracies. Federals will crush just above the brass if the crimp is set too far down, same with the Fiocchi's. I have loaded the federal buckshot hulls with success.. the high brass/low brass is nothing more than marketing glitz.. shotshell cases don't need a "metal base" at all as evidenced by the Activ all plastic hulls that were sold from the 70's to the early 90's. They were fantastic hulls to reload and would reload as many times as the old Winchester Compression formed AA's which have since been replaced by the newer design due to the failure of the equipment which made them.

I've reloaded a lot of high based hulls in the past. Many, many, many hulls besides AA and STSs have brass bases. The newer cheap loads do use steel bases.

If anyone has any once fired 12g Active hulls, let me know. For some reason, my dad likes them for one particular load.

The hulls that most people do not attempt to reload are roll crimped ones but, you can get a roll crimper from Ballistic Products if you want to attempt it.

Since we're on the subject, if someone wanted to save some hulls for reloading, what ammo should we buy? Does anything come loading in the AA/STS hulls?

I put notice out on another forum and had three ppl contact me to sell me their old once fired and in one case new Activ hulls... I too have a load that I will be using these for... you should put a notice out in WTB... there are still some around..

Does anything come loading in the AA/STS hulls?
The more expensive target loads from Remington use the STS hulls.. The old AA's are no longer in production, but the new AA target loads use the newer HS hull which is supposed to be (but in my opinion is not) as good as the old AA's. You will likely have to pay a bit more for the loaded ammo and then make sure you pick them up after firing them. Remington STS and Winchester HS hulls are availabe once fired from a few sources if you want to go that route.

The cheapest way to do it would be to buy the hulls. Midway and Cabelas sell them for about $0.10ea for once-fired hulls.

Otherwise, you can buy them ready to shoot and empty them yourself. There are a variety of loads available. They run about $9 a box. So, you're paying $0.36ea pre-loaded.

one other thing I will put out there, from what I understand is that the new AA hulls now have a 2 pice base wad, so they "could" also seperate and cause a Kboom.

I have loaded the cheap Walmart Win shells with no problem, but I only load them once
