UPDATE: Getting a Dillon XL 650!!!

    Hey guys.

My wife is getting me an XL 650 for a gift!!!

To answer everyone's next two questions:

    1) Yes, she has sisters.

    2) No, they're not single. (sorry)

I've been loading a long time but always on single stage. I learned how to load when I was about 12. I'm 32 now, so basically 20 years of loading experience. I guess I'm ready for progressive...

Here's the thing: I am completely ignorant when it comes to Dillons. I've seen the vids on youtube and read some threads on here but I really need some advice:

Where to get the best deal...

    How to set it up...

Things I should know before I buy...

I want to start off with .223/5.56mm and .38/.357 (because of small primers, I've heard its easier if you keep the same primer diameter)

    Any advice appreciated. Thanks guys!!!

where to get the best deal, brianenos.com, free shipping with $500 or more, if there's a better deal, i dont know about it.

how to set it up, follow the manual that comes with it, in conjunction with the manual with your dies, if you're not using dillon dies.

Things I should know before I buy... buy the casefeeder now!

if your only going to be using small primers, then yes, it's easier, but it only takes a few more minutes to go from large to small primers, and some money, for the parts, or about $80 for the quick change. also, if you're planing on expanding your caliber changes, depending on the caliber, gunwiki can save you money with their interactive caliber change app, depending on the caliber.

also, the roller handle is worth the money, i recommend it. i don't have one, buy my friend recommends the strong mount. i guess it depends on your bench. if you do get the strong mount, you might as well get the bullet tray, too, another great mod.

oh, yea, congrats on the 650, and the wife who will buy you (or let you buy) one.

How to setup - Easy, read the included manual. It's not that difficult. Take your time and make sure nothing binds.

Things to know - Buy a case feeder, extra tool heads and DO NOT CHEAP OUT on die sets, especially for rifle. Carbide dies are worth the extra money. Depending on how much you load, start saving for a Mr Bullet Feeder.

Loading for 5.56/223 is a bit more involved, but there are plenty of videos/instructional pieces around the net.

Loved mine when I had it. Just follow the instructions and you should be good to go. I purchased the trimmer and case feeder from the start, I also had the strong mount and REALLY wanted the roller handle. I really recommended you getting the case feed.

            All great advice.
One thing you should also think about is if you're going to be doing large volume, see if it makes sense to do your own rifle brass prep. I HATE rifle brass prep. It's so time consuming, even with the Giraud trimmer and Dillon Super Swager. Hence, I pay someone to do that and it's worth every cent. That way, you only have to worry about priming, powder and bullet.

I reloaded for two months on a single stage RCBS press before I said this is just not going to fit my needs. I purchased a 650 with case feeder. Now I am content.

i've done both, actually, and i don't spill a grain. to each his own. i find that the thrust bearing mod keeps the shell plate more stable with more tension, without extra friction on the rotation on the shellplate rotation.

Might want to start reading the manual for your new Blue machine.

Don't cut detent ball spring. There is no need to. Why would you want a softer lockup of your shellplate. Just do the bearing mod and be done with it. The newer 650's already come with a lower resistance spring. The spring mod was great on the older models but Dillon has sense corrected the problem. Some people still cut them because someone told them to.

                          nice, on the preread link!

dillon must be doing something right, if they haven't had to updated their manual in 4 years.

I have an older model XL-650. Have modified the spent primer collection system to keep the primers off the floor and the primer ski jump.

                              I see your point...

Anyone ever try using the RCBS "X-die" with the dillon? I have a .223 X now..

I know you have to trim the brass first, even with the X-die but once I've trimmed and marked my brass, I can just "plug and play", so to speak?
