Shooting Slugs

I found an interesting website a few weeks ago. It had data on penetration and terminal performance of a variety of slugs. Now I can't find it. Anyone know what site that's on? An interesting finding was that some of the reduced recoil (lower velocity) slugs tended to overpenetrate.

I have a couple sleeves of the Federal 'Tactical' low recoil slugs. They're tolerable out of my 18.5" 870. Properly pocket the stock and you'll be fine.

This is consistent with my own experience. I've taken both two and four day tactical shotgun courses with this brand of slug, and my shoulder was perfectly fine. Just don't forget proper shooting technique.

I've taken tactical classes, and shot hundreds of 2 3/4" or 3" magnum - 12 gauge - rifled 1oz or 600gr slugs in a day. No bruises no nothing... but then, I modified appropriately.

As for what slug to buy... Brenneke and Fiocchi are my favorites... i.e. good bang for the buck ratios and cleaner, Wolf is fine too, but the plastic they use tends to build up in the chamber faster, make sure you get something that will melt the plastic goo that will build up until you start having Failure-to-Eject problems... then you KNOW you need to clean the chamber. (Tetra Gun - Copper Solvent - which melts plastic as well - was my savior - after my local gunsmith laughed at my goo'd gun).

As for as accuracy with slugs, I've personally, I've not found much difference between brands of slugs (Winchester, Remington, Federal, Brenneke, Fiocchi, Wolf, etc...), any of them are nearly identical in my Mossberg 500. However, buckshot has MAJOR differences - patterning of each brand required.

I've shot hundreds and hundreds of 12 ga slugs. I cast and load my own slugs using a lyman mold. I cast 1oz Foster type slugs out of wheel weights and have shot them out of all chokes including full choke rem 1100's. No problems at all. The smooth barrel rifled slugs are very accurate. out to 100-150 yards.. Sabot slugs are designed to be shot in rifles shot gun barrels only... yeah they will go bang out of a smooth bore but they will not fly straight & true with out some spin. I get my shotgun loading supplies from ballistic products mostly. My 2 3/4 1 ounce load using 33 gr of 800X is going about 1500 fps... recoil is about the same as a 3" mag duck load... but what really kicks is the 2 oz turkey loads. I make.... B2B

You can physically shoot sabot slugs through a smoothbore too.. but the groupings really open up. Stick to rifled slugs with a smoothbore.

yup, it'll work too. The sabot needs rifling to stabilze but inside of 50yds it'll still print within human size target. I shot a grp of Brenneke's and shot 1 round of sabot after. POI was actually higher(by about 4") than the Brenneke's.

an alternate solution is to use sabot that works in both smoothbore and rifled barrels, like the Sauvestre.

For the wuss calling he-man's out there, try shooting prone, butt up on your clavicle and no cheating with the Knoxx pogo stock either!

+1 on the Federal 'Tactical' slugs. You can get them at the gunshow pretty reasonable. For some stupid reason they are stamped LEO only???

Yeah, that was a weird thing. I put a 2 3/4" 20 ga 3/4 oz Foster through a buck's ribcage, no problem. It even exited. That cow must have had some really thick ribs, or they might have hit it at an odd angle.

my wife has one of these.. I shot two 3" slugs out of it at once...... fun.. but it knocked me back a ways....
