    Shooting Slugs

I just bought a Mossberg 500 and am interested in shooting slugs. The barrel is smooth so from what I've heard so far I can shoot rilfed slugs only. However, I am still weary...don't want to damage my barrel, nor put myself in danger. Any advice out there??

    Thanks in advance.

Try the Winchester "Super X" rifled slugs from Walmart. They'll shoot fine out of your Mossberg. You can also shoot any "sabot" slug which uses a plastic wad to buffer the slug down the barrel.

      shotgun slugs

I was doing a little research on this topic myself and found the following websites to be helpful:

      http://www.nrapublications.org/tah/Slugs.asp

      http://www.chuckhawks.com/shotgun_slugs.htm

Your Mossberg probably has either a Cylinder or Improved Cylinder choke and should be able to shoot any slug without worry about damage to the barrel. Accuracy is another matter and you'll want to limit yourself to slugs designed for smooth bores.

Sabot slugs are for use in rifled barrels, not smoothbores. Any brand rifled slug will work in your Mossberg.

Just remember. Slugs kick like a freaken mule. You will be hurting the next day.

You can physically shoot sabot slugs through a smoothbore too.. but the groupings really open up. Stick to rifled slugs with a smoothbore.

Amen to that. Try going through a one day class with a bunch of buck and 40-60 slugs. Oh the pretty colors that appear on your shoulder!

ETA: I have a 500 and it likes pretty much any rifled slug.

If you ever come to Norcal come to the range with me. My 500 with 18.5 inch barrel was pretty tame with the 3 inch Super-X slugs.

I shoot Federal rifle slugs (that is, slugs for smoothbore bbls) out of my Benelli Nova 18.5" pump gun.

Very accurate (given recoil, type of gun, etc.) - hitting coffee cans at 40 yds.

I have a couple sleeves of the Federal 'Tactical' low recoil slugs. They're tolerable out of my 18.5" 870. Properly pocket the stock and you'll be fine. The Remington Low Recoil LE slugs are good, too. I tried some Winchester Super X and those were heavy recoiling slugs.

I was shooting winchester super-x. After about 10 rounds I put my shotgun down and went and shot my Savage. That stuff hurt. It was from an 18" 870.

At mystery mountain a couple years back, we had a "slug house" stage where you shoot 20 slugs in way less than a minute.
When I go to shoot it, they forget to set one target.
Lucky me, they give me the option to take the miss, or re-shoot the stage.

I SHOULD have just taken the miss.

40 slugs within 5 minutes is rough.

For "practical/tactical" shooting, 3-guns etc... try WOLF's slugs... they are a LOT softer... those are the ONLY Wolf's I would ever user on my guns....
